MLL Trade Window Closes With Last-Minute Blockbuster Move
July 2, 2013 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
BOSTON, (Tuesday July 2) - The 2013 MLL trade window closed today at 4 P.M, and while most teams remained relatively quiet, the Charlotte Hounds were extremely active in obtaining both draft picks and players; while Boston executed a last minute blockbuster trade to acquire Stephen Berger from New York.
The trade deadline represents an opportunity for every team in the MLL to either trade away assets to rebuild for the future, or stock up on talent in preparation for a postseason run. Either way, the trade deadline has the potential to completely change the dynamic of a team.
The 2013 deadline got started Monday when the Hounds and Boston Cannons executed a trade which sent defenseman Ricky Pages and goalie Kyle Feeney to the Hounds in exchange for a second round pick in next year's supplemental draft.
Deadline Day began on Tuesday with more movement by Charlotte. The Hounds sent a first round pick in the 2015 Collegiate Draft to Hamilton along with midfielder Josh Amidon, and received rookie middie Josh Hawkins. Charlotte then found another trade partner in Ohio; the Machine sent their fifth round supplemental draft pick to the Hounds and received midfielder Gerry Reilly.
As is common in most professional sports leagues, the drama that comes with the trade deadline often comes down to the last few moments. With just a few minutes remaining before the deadline, two big deals went down sending impact players to Boston, New York and Chesapeake. The Lizards sent newly acquired face-off specialist Matt Dolente to the Bayhawks before trading a fourth round supplemental draft pick to Charlotte in exchange for Attackman Max Van Bourgondien and defensman Dan DiMaria. Soon after that trade was finalized, New York sent Berger to Boston and acquired Steve Mock.
