MLL News and Notes
Published on June 10, 2009 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Movin' on up- Scott Urick played in his 101st career regular season game, keeping pace at a game behind Tim Goettelmann. Scott Urick is also 1 goal behind Mark Millon's (239)second place spot on all-time goals scored, which he should break this coming weekend. Within the MLL 2009 regular season, Urick should be able to become the leader in career goals by passing Jesse Hubbard (247).
Just another day in the office- Alex Smith collected 8 ground balls (a game high) and went 21 of 33 at face off. He leads the MLL in GBs with 26. Smith also leads the MLL in face-off attempts and wins. He is averaging 22 wins per game so far this season.
Third Time's a Charm- Well hopefully for the Washington Bayhawks. They play Toronto this coming week for the third time in a month. This will be their final matchup in the 2009 regular season. In the past two meetings, both in Annapolis, Md. - home of the Bayhawks, Toronto has triumphed, scoring 17 points in each decision.
Mighty Joe Walters- Walters (Toronto) led all players in Thursday's ESPN2 game with five goals. Last year's Steinfeld Cup Most Valuable Player, has tallied 11 goals in four games so far this season, good for second in points for the Nationals behind Merrick Thomson's 14. Walters's five goal performance topped all goal scorers in each of the three games played in Week 4.
Rookie Rage- Zack Greer lit up his competition to match last week's spectacular performance with another 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist). He easily won the Cascade Rookie of the Week award again, as no other rookie has come close to his performances. Reconnecting with his former Duke teammate Matt Danowski, Greer assisted Danowski once and received an assist from Danowski as well. The Greer-Danowski tandem should produce many more points this season.
Taking the Lead- Nationals X-man Geoff Snider took the lead in the MLL for penalty minutes with 10 total. Nine of these minutes came in Thursday's matchup against the Bayhawks. Snider recorded a 5 minute penalty for unsportsman-like conduct, a 1 minute penalty for an illegal body check, and a 3 minute penalty for an illegal crosse. All three penalties came in the fourth quarter.
Over the Hill- Kyle Dixon (Washington) scored his 50th goal, as well as his 10th 2-pointer this past weekend against the Nationals. Dixon led both teams in scoring with 4 goals (1 2-point goal) and 1 assist for 6 points, lifting him to the MLL leader in scoring.
Built Ford Tough- Spencer Ford (Washington), in his 5th MLL Season and with his 5th MLL team, tallied his 100th career regular season assist against the Nationals. He is 7th all-time in career assists, and also holds the record for most assists in a single season (47). Additionally, Ford currently leads the MLL this season in assists with 11.
Golden Oldie- Veteran Tim Goettelmann is approaching 300 points, marking another milestone in what could be the most memorable year for the Lizards attackman. He already is first in regular season games played, fourth on career goals, sixth on career points (he will eventually move into the top 5), and finally, he is tied for second in game-winning-goals.
Can't Stop, Won't Stop- Kevin Leveille's (Chicago) is currently on the longest scoring streak in MLL history. It began while he was on the Cannons, August 14, 2004 in a game at Philadelphia. The streak has continued for 52 straight regular season games. If you include the All Star games as well as the playoff games the total streak is at 57.
Milestones a Mile High- Brendan Mundorf (Denver) scored career regular season goals 100 and 101 this past weekend against the Machine. With one assisted (from Matt Brown) and one unassisted goal, Mundorf broke the career goal century mark and leads the Outlaws in goals and points.
Cannon Captures Century- Kevin Cassese (Boston) got his 100th career regular season point this past weekend. The 8-year veteran from Duke University ripped a 2-pointer, beating Brian Dougherty, as part of Boston's thwarted comeback against Long Island.
Not All Outlaws are Bad- Jesse Schwartzman (Denver), after his 17-saves performance against Chicago, is approaching 300 career saves through almost two seasons. Racking up 193 saves last season, Jesse ranked second amongst goalies for the 2008 season. Thus far, the Outlaws goalie has provided a consistently strong presence between the pipes, pushing his team to a 3-1 record.
Saving Machine...literally- Chicago Machine goalie Mike Gabel is approaching 600 career saves in his fourth season with the league. Currently 8th on the career saves list, Gabel should surpass Tillman Johnson this season, following Cannons goalie Mike Levin. Gabel also ranks 7th all time in most games and minutes played in the regular season.
A Friendly Reminder- The game time for Saturday's Washington Bayhawks @ Toronto Nationals at BMO Field, has been changed to 1:30 PM ET. Red, White, and Blue- Several MLL players attended the Team USA tryouts, held at Bryant University and the 40-man training team was announced today. The roster will be shaved down to 23 by the end of fall in order to fulfill Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) requirements for the World Championship in Manchester, England from July 10-24, 2010.
