MLL 2020 Day 6 Recap
July 23, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Philadelphia Barrage VS New York Lizards
On Day 6, the Philadelphia Barrage bested the New York Lizards 12-11 to improve to 2-3, while the Lizards fell to 0-5 in their final game of the 2020 season.
Colin Minicus came up big for Philly to get the Barrage back in the win column when he scored the game-winning goal with 1:22 left.
The Lizard's had one last opportunity to tie the game with 14 seconds left but came up short.
New York controlled the first half holding a 5-3 lead, but Philadelphia's offense found their rhythm in the second half to turn things around.
Games are often won in the fourth quarter, and that's exactly what Philly took advantage of. The Lizard's held a 10-6 lead at the end of the third, but the Barrage scored five of the last six goals in 13 minutes to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Alex Woodall helped the Barrage's offense get their spark going. He won 20 out of his 27 faceoff draws.
"We had a slow start just as a team overall," Barrage midfielder Tyrese Gibson said. "We said to ourselves, 'Hey 30 minutes left, if we don't win, we're not in.' We dug deep, and we're proud of all our guys. We worked hard and got the dub."
Boston Cannons VS Connecticut Hammerheads
The Connecticut Hammerheads defeated the Boston Cannons 11-8 Thursday night to improve to 2-2, while Boston fell to 2-2.
In the first quarter, both offenses started out slowly, with the game tied at 1-1 after 15 minutes of play.
Boston started to get their offense going in the second quarter, but it wasn't enough to beat this Hammerheads team.
Ben Martin scored with 20 seconds left in the first hat to cut the deficit to three going into halftime. Martin led the team with three goals, all of which were assisted by Will Sands, who finished the night with four assists.
The Hammerheads came out for the second half ready to play. They scored four goals and held the Cannons to one goal to tie the game at 6.
Connecticut outscored Boston 9-3 in the last two quarters to lift The Hammerheads to their second straight win.
Sean Sconone had 22 saves and was the key to slowing down this tough Cannon's offense, filled with the talents of Randy Statts, Bryce Wasserman and Mark Cockerton.
The Hammerheads will be looking to capture their third tomorrow night against the Chesapeake Bayhawks.
"Every single game, we just get a little bit better and build that chemistry," Martin said. Coming in with two practices, I think we only had a little bit of a disadvantage compared to some other teams who have been playing together a lot longer than this group of guys. But you can see the talent we have and the hard work we put in."
