MISL names players of the week
March 28, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Brett Phillips, St. Louis Steamers
Brett Phillips went 2-0 over the weekend, making 21 saves in home victories over Chicago (6-4 on Friday) and Kansas City (9-6 on Saturday). With the wins, St. Louis (18-15) won consecutive games for the first time since February 2 and 4 and slipped past Cleveland (16-14) into third place in the MISL standings. The accomplished 36-year-old has been a fixture in net for the Steamers all season long, posting a 14-13 record and 4.75 goals against average. In his 14 wins, Phillips holds an impressive 4.03 GAA and .737 save percentage. He also earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors on November 8 and January 3.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Drew Kopp, Philadelphia KiXX
Thanks in large part to Drew Kopp's workmanlike efforts, Philadelphia's defense was nearly air-tight in an 8-2 win over the Cleveland Force on Saturday night. Cleveland entered the contest having scored 35 goals over the course of a five- game winning streak and leading the MISL in shots per game (33.1), but managed only 23 shots against the KiXX, 13 of which were blocked before they reached goalkeeper Peter Pappas. Pappas had to make only eight saves in the game, and none in the fourth quarter. The 28-year-old Kopp, one of the league's most solid pure defenders, has recorded nine points (seven goals, two assists) and 19 blocks in 28 games this season. The University of Pittsburgh grad is the second KiXX player to be named Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining five- time winner Pat Morris.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Carlos Farias, St. Louis Steamers
"Chile" Farias scored seven points (five goals, two assists) in his first two games at Savvis Center since being acquired from Baltimore on March 18. The 28- year-old playmaker tallied a goal in the Steamers' 6-4 win over Chicago on Friday, and scored four goals and six points (both of which tied MISL season highs) as St. Louis defeated the Kansas City Comets 9-6 on Saturday. Three of his weekend goals came on restarts. Farias, who has scored seven goals and 10 points in his first four games with the Steamers, is now second in the MISL in both points (51) and goals (29) and tied for fifth with 22 assists. The native of Santiago, Chile, also earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on December 6 and January 10.
