GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Peter Pappas, Philadelphia KiXX
Pappas was virtually unyielding in Philadelphia's 5-2 win over the San Diego Sockers at San Diego Sports Arena on Saturday, October 4. The 31-year-old saved 19 of 21 shots for the game, including 13 of 14 in the second half as the KiXX held off San Diego's comeback effort. Pappas, a native of Toronto, has been named to six All-Star teams and five All-League teams. He earned weekly honors three times in 2002-03, and was named the League's Defensive Player of the Month for November.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Genoni Martinez, Monterrey Fury
The MISL's reigning Defender of the Year made his presence felt early for the expansion Fury, who split a pair of games in Dallas this past weekend. The 28-year-old scored Monterrey's first-ever goal on a penalty kick at 7:19 of the second quarter in Saturday's 9-2 Sidekicks win, and led the team with seven shots on goal and two blocks. On Sunday, October 5, Martinez scored a pair of power-play goals and blocked a game-high four shots in an 8-6 Monterrey victory. The Mexico City native scored 26 goals and blocked a League-leading 88 shots for the Harrisburg Heat in 2002-03.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
David Doyle, Dallas Sidekicks
Doyle led all MISL players in scoring over the weekend with one goal and five assists for six points in two games against Monterrey. He tallied a goal and three assists in Saturday's 9-2 Dallas win, and assisted on two more goals in Sunday's 8-6 loss to the Fury. The versatile 38-year-old also spent time between the pipes in both games, totaling 3:59 in goal; he led all non-goalkeepers with 141:23 in net in 2002-03. The native of Dublin scored 29 goals and assisted on 21 others last season.
The Dallas Sidekicks, Monterrey Fury, Philadelphia KiXX, and San Diego Sockers were all in action this past weekend as the MISL opened its 2003-04 season. The Baltimore Blast, Kansas City Comets, Milwaukee Wave, and St. Louis Steamers all open this weekend, while the Cleveland Force kick off their campaign on October 19.
