MISL Holds Expansion Draft

(WESTPORT, CT. â JULY 23. 2003) The Major Indoor Soccer League conducted an Expansion Draft on Monday, July 21 to stock the rosters of the MISL Expansion club in Monterrey, Mexico and the re-activated St. Louis Steamers team. The Monterrey Club exercised their rights to the first four selections, as they had no roster players going into the Expansion Draft. St. Louis had the playing rights to four players reserved via prior agreement with the MISL when the franchise went temporarily inactive for the 2002-03 MISL season. The players returning to the St. Louis Steamers are Jeff DiMaria, Fernando Errecalde, Justin Labrum, and Brett Phillips.
Each MISL Member Club was permitted to protect 10 field players and one goalkeeper from their rosters. A list of players eligible for claim was distributed by the League to Monterrey and St. Louis. When a Member Club lost a player from their available list, it was then allowed to add one player to their protected list. A total of 24 players were selected: one Goalkeeper, eight Midfielders, eight Forwards, and seven Defenders by Monterrey and St.Louis.
With their first selection in the MISL Expansion Draft the Monterrey, Mexico team selected midfielder Martin Dugas, a six-year veteran from Canada, from the Western Conference Champion Milwaukee Wave. Then with their second selection Monterrey picked 15 year veteran Defender, Armando Valdivia from the Dallas Sidekicks. With their third selection, Monterrey claimed Croatian National Team defender Sinisa Alebic from the Milwaukee Wave. Rounding out the first round, midfielder Gary DePalma was selected from the Philadelphia Kixx. With Monterrey picking the first four players in the first round the teams alternated their selections from round II through round 11.
St.Louis first pick in the 2003 MISL Expansion Draft came in Round II with the sixth overall selection, as the Steamers drafted native Missourian, Midfielder Craig Scheer from the MISL Champion Baltimore Blast.
