MISL Championship to be televised on ESPN2 for second straight season
April 12, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
WESTPORT, Conn. (Wednesday, April 12, 2006) - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) and ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, jointly announced today that an agreement has been reached which places the League's 2006 MISL Championship Series Final live on ESPN2 for the second consecutive season. The exclusive agreement features the deciding game of the 2006 MISL Championship Series Finals on Sunday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
"I am extremely pleased that we have been able to continue our relationship with ESPN for a second straight season," stated MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan. "Once again, I applaud the MISL Management Committee for their unanimous support in revising the format of our Championship Series Finals in order to enhance the visibility of our sport and maximize our national exposure. The MISL is a made-for- television product and I look forward to solidifying a long-term global media partnership as we continue to grow our sport and expand our League."
The format for the 2006 MISL Championship Series Finals is a two-game, "home-and-home" series featuring the winners of the Championship Series Semifinals. In the event that the finalists split their two games, the 2006 MISL Champion will be determined by a "Golden Goal" session, which will immediately follow the conclusion of Game Two. The MISL had initially announced a best-two-our-of three format for the Championship Series Finals.
The Championship Series consists of four teams. The MISL Regular Season Champion receives an automatic bid to postseason play and earns the No. 1 seed as determined by regular season win percentage. The other postseason spots are allotted to the three teams with the next best regular season win percentage, determining the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 seeds. Home field advantage is awarded to the higher seeded team. The Championship Series Semifinal Round is a two-game "home-and-home" series, with the No. 4 seed Chicago Storm meeting the No. 1 seed and Regular Season Champion St. Louis Steamers in one semifinal, and the No. 3 seed Baltimore Blast drawing the No. 2 seed and defending MISL Champion Milwaukee Wave in the other semifinal. The higher seed reserves the right to choose home field for either Game One or Game Two. Should the semifinalists split their two games, the series winner will be determined by a "Golden Goal" session, which will immediately follow the conclusion of Game Two.
