MISL Approved Single Goal System
May 19, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
(Westport, Conn.-May 19,2003) Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Commissioner Steve Ryan announced today, with approval from the League Management Committee, the re-instatement of the single goal scoring system. The decision was made at the league meetings held in Baltimore May 15 and 16. The single goal scoring system will be adopted in the upcoming 2003-04 MISL season.
"The Major Indoor Soccer League is constantly evaluating its' position in many areas of improving the game of indoor soccer. The multi-point system was not traditional in worldwide soccer, therefore, the MISL opted to rejoin the mainstream and go back to the single goal scoring system." Commented Commissioner Ryan while announcing the MISL Management Committee decision.
Prior to this decision, a multi-point scoring system had been in place since the 1988-89 American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA) season, which then continued under the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) and the MISL. Under the multi-point system, teams were given the opportunity to earn two or three-point goals.
The original MISL (1978-92), Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL) and the World Indoor Soccer League (WISL) all used the single goal scoring system during their respective seasons. The present MISL continued the multi-point system when it started back in December of 2001 and continued through the 2002-03 MISL season.
MISL Director of Soccer Operations and former MISL player David Grimaldi said, "History and tradition has prevailed, the game is all important."
The Major Indoor Soccer League is a single-entity organization featuring coast-to-coast presence with teams throughout the United States. The MISL is "the single major league of indoor soccer," playing a 149-game schedule that begins in October 2003 and concludes in March 2004.
