MISL Appoints Herb Silva Director of Officials

(Westport, Conn., May 8, 2002) – Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Commissioner Steve Ryan announced today that Herb Silva, a 25-year veteran referee and former United States Soccer Federation (USSF) administrator, has been named the Major Indoor Soccer League Director of Officials. Silva's appointment is effective immediately.

Silva, who spent the past six years as the Manager of Professional League Referee Assignment and Assessment for the USSF, will direct the entire MISL officiating department. The former USSF national referee will be responsible for MISL referee education, training, assignment, and assessment with U.S. Soccer as well as overall department management.

"As the MISL expands and grows, we recognize the need to enhance our officiating department and feel very fortunate to have one of the country's most experienced and highly respected soccer officials joining our League," MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan stated. "Herb Silva has over two decades of professional referee experience and brings a wealth of knowledge and professionalism to the MISL."

Silva, who began his professional refereeing career with the North American Soccer League in 1977 (NASL), has been involved with various United States professional soccer leagues over the past 25 years. The 55-year old former United States Marine Corps officer has officiated professional soccer games in the NASL, the original Major Indoor Soccer League, the Major Soccer League, and the Continental Indoor Soccer League while serving as the Director of Officials for both the original MISL and the MSL. The World Indoor Soccer League also utilized Silva's expertise by hiring him as the League's Referee Assignor.

As the Manager of Professional League Assessment for the USSF, Silva was responsible for referee assignment and assessment for Major League Soccer, the Women's United Soccer Association, and the United Soccer Leagues.

Silva is a National Emeritus Referee as well as a USSF National Assessor and instructor in the U.S. Soccer National Program for Referee Development. The Chesterfield, MO resident is also a USSF youth licensed coach and serves as the Vice President of the Missouri Soccer Association. Additionally, he is a former collegiate and high school referee.

Silva, who is a Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD), has operated his practice, Chesterfield Dental Associates, for the past 24 years. The Vietnam veteran and former Naval aviator will also serve as a member of the MISL Competition Committee.

The father of four, who has been married for 34 years, replaces Steve Siomos who served as the League's Director of Game Officials for 14 years.
