Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - Kennys Vargas lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that was misplayed by Willie Argo, allowing Levi Michael to score and give the Fort Myers Miracle a 6-5 walk-off win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Friday.
After the Miracle blew a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth, the Stone Crabs turned around and returned the favor to the Miracle in the bottom of the frame. With the game tied 5-5, Michael and Aderling Mejia reached on singles off of Eliazer Suaro. Miguel Sano drew a walk to load the bases and move the winning run to third.
Vargas lifted a 1-0 pitch to left field that likely would have been deep enough for Michael to score off of, but Argo became twisted around in left and missed the ball entirely. It was Charlotte's fifth error of the game and Michael scored easily to end the game.
The Miracle scored the first two runs of the game against Stone Crabs starter Parker Markel, but the Crabs rallied with four straight runs off of Miracle starter Jason Wheeler to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth.
Fort Myers got a run back in the fifth when Angel Morales singled to Argo in left and Argo bobbled the ball, allowing Stephen Wickens to score from second.
Vargas put the Miracle ahead in the seventh when he blasted his ninth homer of the year, a two-run shot, to deep left-center.
The 5-4 lead held until the top of the ninth. Zack Jones struck out Richie Shaffer to start the frame, but then issued two walks and a single. With one out and the bases loaded, he walked Jake DePew to force home the tying run.
Then with Kes Carter at the plate and the bases reloaded, Jones threw a wild pitch that bounced off the backstop. The ball rolled right back to Kyle Knudson, who flipped underhanded to home and Jones was able to tag Hector Guevara at the plate to save a run. Jones ended up striking out Carter to end the inning.
Jones got the win and Suero got the loss. Mejia had four hits for the Miracle.
The Miracle (34-13) are now 9-1 this season against the Stone Crabs (20-27). The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. with a fireworks show following the contest. Tickets can be purchased on www.miraclebaseball.com or at the Miracle ticket office beginning at 9 a.m.
