Minnesota Swarm Sign No. 1 Overall Pick Logan Schuss
SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The National Lacrosse League's (NLL) Minnesota Swarm today announced that the team has agreed to terms with No. 1 overall pick Logan Schuss on a two-year contract. Schuss, a left-handed forward from Ohio State University, became the first No. 1 overall pick in Swarm history this past September during the 2013 NLL Entry Draft.
Schuss, 22, started and played in every game during his four-year career at Ohio State and finished as the school's all-time leader in points (237) and goals (146). In his senior season as a co-captain this past spring, Schuss notched a career-high 44 goals along with 28 assists and helped the Buckeyes reach the 2013 NCAA Quarterfinals.
"Getting Logan signed is key to our success," Swarm associate general manager and head coach Joe Sullivan said. "Clearly he is a standout player that is going to do a lot of great things for our team on and off the floor. But more importantly, he's going to shore up what we needed on the left-side with some toughness and an ability to play an inside-outside game."
Schuss racked up national recognition on top of his school records, including two ECAC Player of the Year awards in 2012 and 2013, and was a three-time USILA All-American selection. The Ladner, British Columbia native was also selected as one of the top 25 nominees for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy in 2013. Off the field, Schuss excelled in the classroom and was a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice, and a 2013 Senior CLASS Award finalist.
This summer, the 6-foot, 210-pound lefty forward scored 56 points (29g, 27a) in 12 games with the WLA's New Westminster Salmonbellies. Schuss also put in time with the MLL's Ohio Machine, and played alongside current Swarm players Kiel Matisz, Greg Downing and fellow 2013 draftee and Ohio State alum Dominique Alexander. In 11 games, Schuss scored 28 goals and finished with 35 points in his rookie season.
Minnesota also agreed to terms with fourth-round pick (No. 29 overall), Jordan Houtby, on a one-year deal. Hailing from St. Catharines, Ontario, the defensemen played four years of college lacrosse at the University of Detroit-Mercy. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander helped lead a defense that finished in the top three in the nation in caused turnovers all four of his years and wrapped up his career as the NCAA's all-time leader in caused turnovers with 158. He also picked up 289 career ground balls and scored 14 points with nine goals. In 17 games with the MSL's Brooklin Redmen this summer, Houtby recorded three points (1g, 2a).
"I watched Jordan all summer long with Brooklin, and he continuously got better," Sullivan said. "He had the chance to play behind a lot of really good defenders. Given the opportunity here, you'll also see him continue to get better and develop into a solid defender in the NLL."
All contracts are currently pending league approval.
In 2014, the Swarm will be celebrating their 10th season of professional box lacrosse in the NLL and will kickoff the regular season on the road against the defending NLL champion Rochester Knighthawks at 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday, Dec. 28.
Minnesota will make its home debut at The Hive celebrating Native American Heritage Day Sunday, Jan. 19 during a 2 p.m. matchup against the Philadelphia Wings at Xcel Energy Center.
