Minnesota Swarm News Release
SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota Swarm general manager Marty O'Neill announced today that the National Lacrosse League (NLL) team has named Duane Jacobs head coach.
"We are pleased to hire Duane to coach our young team and look forward to continuing to build on the success we achieved last season," said O'Neill.
Jacobs, 40 (3/22/66), will begin his first season as a head coach in the NLL with the Swarm after most recently serving as an assistant coach for the NLL's Buffalo Bandits the past two seasons. With the Bandits he was responsible for devising and implementing the club's defensive schemes in 2004 and was in charge of their offense system in 2005. Jacobs is also currently in his third season as head coach of the Six Nations Chiefs in the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA). He spent one season as the head coach of the Six Nations Junior 'A' Arrows in 2002.
The Burlington, Ontario-native started playing organized lacrosse when he was five-years-old, growing-up on the Six Nations Indian Reserve outside of Brantford, Ontario. Jacobs played on five Canadian National Championship Teams as an amateur and spent 11 seasons in the NLL. He recorded 161 goals and 164 assists for 325 points in 95 regular season games and added 42 points (20-22=42) in 14 career playoff contests with Detroit (1993-94), Rochester (1995-2002) and Buffalo (2003) before retiring following the 2003 campaign. Jacobs was a member of the 1997 Rochester Knighthawks championship team and was named to the NLL All-Pro Second Team four consecutive seasons from 1996-99.
He and his wife, Judy, currently reside in LaSalle, Ontario with their son, Tie, where Jacobs runs his own law practice as a defense lawyer when he is not coaching lacrosse.
Jacobs replaces Adam Mueller, who was named head coach and interim general manager of the expansion New York franchise on July 11.
Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Minnesota went 8-8 in its second NLL campaign last season and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in team history. For more information on becoming a Minnesota Swarm season ticket holder please call (888) MN-SWARM.
