Minnesota Swarm News Release
SAINT PAUL, MINN - The National Lacrosse League's (NLL) Minnesota Swarm is proud to announce the inaugural "Lax-4-Life" lacrosse camp, which will be held this week at the Fond du Lac Reservation in Northeastern Minnesota from July 26-30.
Together with the support of the Native American Law Enforcement Summit (NALES) and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Swarm is hoping to bring lacrosse back to tribal communities and help preserve the heritage of the Native's ancestral game.
"With 23 percent of our league being Native American and lacrosse originating from the Natives, it was important to make sure that the Native community was playing lacrosse in Minnesota," said Swarm Co-Owner and Vice President Andy Arlotta. "We wanted to reach out to the Native community and help support their game by hosting this camp. By doing so, we hope the Native community will continue to grow the sport of lacrosse. None of this would have been possible, however, without the partnerships with NALES and Fond du Lac. Their hard work and commitment has made this camp a reality."
Around seven kids between the ages of 13-15 from each Minnesota tribal community will be in attendance this week. Swarm Assistant Coach Aime Caines will direct the camp and will be joined by defenseman Travis Hill and Director of Player and Community Relations Kevin Dunnigan as the camp's other instructors.
Camp curriculum and programming includes:
Introduction and education on skills needed to play the game in a fun and safe environment
Individual skill sessions
Tactical instruction and competitive play
Five-on-five game play
Sports nutrition sessions
Speed and agility training
Theme night BBQ with staff
Conditioning and training
Cultural and heritage team building activities
Tools and rules of lacrosse (stick stringing, classroom time)
