February 16, 2017 - Great West League (GWL)
Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox News Release
Former Baltimore Orioles organization player and current Head Baseball Coach for the River Valley High School has been hired to lead the 2017 Yuba City Bears Baseball Club. Gillen is in his first season as the Head Coach for River Valley and fifth season overall with four playoff appearances. "We are excited to have Jeramy as part of our organization and the inaugural Coach of the modern-day Bears. Jeramy is well respected by the community and has shown tremendous success at River Valley. We look for big things from Jeramy in 2017, leading the Bears into the GWL campaign and we know he will have the players ready," said VP Michael Mink.
Gillen was born in Appleton Wisconsin but was raised in Southern California. A product of Laguna Hills High School where he was a 4-time Varsity letterman and 4 time all league player. Gillen went on to college to play at Saddleback and Fresno State University. Jeramy received his Bachelors in Physical Education and is currently working on his Master's in Education. Gillen played 2 years professionally in the Baltimore Orioles Organization to wrap up his baseball playing career. "This is an exciting opportunity for me to be part of the Yuba City Bears. With the rich history of baseball in Yuba City this is great for the community and the city of Yuba City by having the Bears return, "said Head Coach Jeramy Gillen.
Jeramy started coaching in 1997 at Saddleback college working with pitchers and outfielders at California Community College with Hall of Fame coach Jack Hodges for 5 years where the team complied a record of 164-68 with 5 playoff berths and 1 Orange Empire conference championship, along with a runner- up in the 1998 California State Community College Championships. "I look forward to working with players from our community and communities surrounding the Yuba-Sutter area. Going to the ballpark is a great form of entertainment, with Yuba City having its own team it gives local players a way of continuing their baseball dreams. It not only brings families out to support a local team but also brings the community together as well, "said Head Coach Gillen.
"I believe being a baseball coach is one of the most rewarding careers I could ever have. I strongly feel that the team effort is solely responsible to win any kind of game. The whole idea is that everything is a choice. You must choose what you focus on. In the game of baseball if you can focus on the right things, then the results will take care of themselves. I will make sure that my players have the same amount of enthusiasm and love for the game as I have. That will help to bring the best out of everyone, "said Head Coach Gillen. "Jeramy will have this team ready as we open up on the road in Medford on May 30th." We do need to reach out to the community because, as we sign players the need for new host families grows with the Bears this season, "said VP Mink.
