Miners survive Silverados

McALLEN, TEXAS - Playing the host Rio Grande Valley Silverados in the McAllen Convention Center isn't an easy chore. The visiting East Kentucky Miners trailed Rio Grande Valley at the end of each of the first three quarters Friday night before outscoring the home team 28-20 in the final period. East Kentucky's late effort resulted in a hard-fought 95-91 win for the visiting team.

The Miners won the quarter points 4-3, continuing to make a strong push in the CBA's American Conference.

East Kentucky's latest triumph gave the Kevin Keathley-coached team its third straight win. The Miners improved to 15-13 following the victory.

East Kentucky has the best record of the four CBA expansion teams.

Rio Grande Valley outscored East Kentucky 15-13 in the opening period. The Silverados were out in front of the Miners 45-42 at halftime.

Josh Pace led East Kentucky with 22 points and seven rebounds. Boo Jackson added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Miners. In a balanced East Kentucky offensive effort, Jason McLeish pushed in 14 points while Bryant Northern and Marcus Heard scored 12 apiece.

Rio Grande Valley led 71-67 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Rod Neeley was Rio Grande Valley's offensive leader, finishing with a game-high 26 points. Toby Smith was Rio Grande Valley's second-leading scorer, ending the contest with 21 points. Patrick Fields, a new signee for the Silverados, added 19 points.

Walt Waters scored nine points for the Texas team.

Rio Grande Valley dropped to 4-24 after suffering the loss to the Miners. East Kentucky will face host Rio Grande Valley Saturday night in a rematch at 7:35 p.m.
