
Miners roll past Georgia, improve to 8-0

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Remaining perfect in the 2008-09 season, the East Kentucky Miners defeated the Georgia Gwizzlies 140-95 Sunday at the East Kentucky Expo Center in another Interleague Challenge game versus an ABA opponent. East Kentucky was dominant, blanking Georgia 7-0 in the quarter points category on its way to improving to 8-0.
Seven different East Kentucky players reached the double figures scoring plateau in the Interleague Challenge victory. The Miners managed to break free from the Georgia team in the first half. East Kentucky owned a double-digit lead at the end of each quarter. The Miners carried a 63-47 lead into halftime after leading Georgia 35-24 at the conclusion of the opening period.
"The second half was a good half for us," said East Kentucky Coach Kevin Keathley. "We shot almost 76-percent in the second half. We needed to push the ball more in the second half and we did. The players gave a solid second half effort. We made some adjustments following the first half and were able to get the win and improve to 8-0."
Former CBA Player of the Year Galen Young turned in a triple-double performance of 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Miners. Mike Dean was the leading scorer for East Kentucky, finishing with a game-high 37 points. Jermaine Blackburn contributed 27 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for East Kentucky.
Jason McLeish scored 17 points and handed out seven assists in another solid effort after entering the game off of the East Kentucky bench. Mike Crain scored 16 points, Joe Buck netted 11 and Wayne Turner added 10 for the Miners. Buck had a double-double for East Kentucky, hauling in 10 rebounds to go along with his 11 points.
Alonzo Hird pulled down 11 rebounds - eight of which were on the defensive end - in 13 minutes for the Miners.
East Kentucky - which now owns wins over five different ABA teams - outrebounded Georgia 54-25.
Joe Manuel led Georgia with 25 points. Moses Edun followed with 20 points for the Gwizzlies. Five different Georgia players scored 11 or more points in the Interleague Challenge matchup.
Georgia was held to a 39.8-percent shooting effort from the field.
The Miners shot 68-percent from the field and 84-percent from the free throw line.
East Kentucky dished out 37 assists opposed to committing 18 turnovers.
