PALMER, Alaska - As the demands of a student-athlete lifestyle continue to climb, many students look for ways to relax from the everyday grind.

Yoga provides a peaceful yet challenging way for college athletes to improve flexibility and strength in their respective sports while dealing with stress.

Members of the Mat-Su Miners took to Hermon Brothers Field on Saturday to fine tune their yoga abilities during the team's annual Yoga in the Ballpark event.

"It was my first time ever doing yoga," Miners shortstop Josh Bissonette said. "It was definitely a fun experience to be able to spend the morning with my teammates and fans on the field."

Participants followed along as Ailis Vann, owner of the Midnight Sun Yoga Center, demonstrated a variety of introductory poses over the course of an hour.

Mat-Su starting pitcher Jacob Hughey said the routine was similar to workouts at as a member of the Long Beach State baseball team.

"We do it every day in between conditioning," Hughey said. "It really helps out with stability and stretching."

The Midnight Sun Yoga Center sponsored the free event for residents of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.

"It was a very unique experience," Hughey said. "It's not often you get to say that you've done yoga with fans on a baseball field before."
