PIKEVILLE, KY. - The "Take a Stand Against Child Abuse" statewide campaign came to Pike County Wednesday, April 23. Launched during National Child Abuse and Prevention Month by Sunrise Children's Services, the Take a Stand Against Child Abuse campaign made its statewide presence felt in Pike County. Sunrise Children's Services has an Eastern Region foster care facility in Ivel. The Ivel facility served 145 children in 2006-07. East Kentucky Miners Coach Kevin Keathley was among those taking a stand in Pike County.
"Myself and the entire Miners organization have banded together in the fight against child abuse," said Keathley. "I encourage everyone to continue to take a stand against child abuse. It was a pleasure to be a part of such a worthwhile cause."
Keathley is a staunch advocate against child abuse.
Additional Take a Stand events were slated for Bowling Green, Danville, Elizabethtown, Lexington, Louisville, Morehead, Mount Washington, Owensboro, Paducah and Somerset. The Take a Stand campaign is scheduled to run through April 25.
While helping to raise awareness, the Take a Stand campaign raises money to help provide the children in Sunrise's care with presents at Christmas.
Participants in the Take a Stand events collect pledges. Businesses and individuals also sponsor life-size and desktop-size cardboard stands of children to display throughout the month.
Brian Shannon, a regional fundraising representative, and Angela Horn, coordinated the Pike County Take a Stand event.
