Miners Beat WV Blazers, Move to 3-0

PIKEVILLE, KY. - The East Kentucky Miners continue to "Bring the Energy." East Kentucky improved to 3-0 Monday night - both overall and in the Interleague Challenge versus the ABA (American Basketball Association). Representing the CBA (Continental Basketball Association) in solid fashion, East Kentucky gained an early lead and never trailed the visiting West Virginia Blazers. The Miners rolled for a second straight game against the West Virginia professional basketball organization, winning 119-87. In dominating fashion, East Kentucky swept the quarter points 7-0.

East Kentucky outscored West Virginias 34-22 in the opening quarter and took a 64-44 lead into halftime.

For a second straight game, Mike Dean led East Kentucky in scoring. Dean connected on 10-of-13 shots from the floor and 10-of-11 foul shots, scoring a team-high 30 points for the Miners.

For a second straight game, six East Kentucky players reached double figures in the scoring column. Jason McLeish was the team's second-leading scorer, collecting 20 points.

Former CBA Player of the Year Galen Young turned in a triple-double of 10 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds for the Miners. Delvin Thomas registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winning team Joe Buck narrowly missed a double-double for the Miners, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Jermaine Blackburn scored 15 points, hauled in seven rebounds, dished off four assists and recorded three steals in East Kentucky's winning effort.

East Kentucky featured a balanced attack.

Former University of Kentucky Wildcat Wayne Turner scored seven points, dished off four assists and pulled down three rebounds for the Miners. Second-year East Kentucky player Mike Crain added nine points.

"Anytime you can start the season 3-0 overall and 2-0 on your home floor, it's a good momentum-builder," said East Kentucky Coach Kevin Keathley. "Overall it was a great effort. We played better defensively in the second half."

East Kentucky led 89-65 at the end of the third quarter.

Maurice Davis led West Virginia with a game-high 31 points. Corey Love contributed a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers. Desi Crisp also reached double figures for West Virginia. Crisp scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Blazers.

East Kentucky will return to the Expo Center floor Wednesday in an Interleague Challenge game versus the ABA's Kentucky Bisons. The Miners defeated the Bisons 102-94 in their season-opener less than one week ago. Tickets for the Miners-Bisons matchup remain available.
