
Milwaukee Moves to 7-0

The Milwaukee Wave improved to 7-0 on the season with a 17-4 victory over the Cleveland Force on November 3 as goalkeeper Victor Nogueira became the first player in indoor soccer history to log 40,000 career minutes of game action. Nogueira, who is also the sport's only player to have played in four different decades, made seven saves in the historic game as the Wave won its 27th consecutive regular season home contest and 13th consecutive regular season outing overall.
Milwaukee's victory also maintained the Wave's four-game lead on the San Diego Sockers in the Major Indoor Soccer League's Western Conference standings. San Diego (3-4) took over sole possession of second place in the West with a thrilling 22-21 victory over Kansas City (1-5) on November 2. Sockers' forward Carlos "Chile" Farias scored three goals and posted eight points in a contest that featured 43 combined points, 85 combined shots, and seven lead changes.
San Diego's win moved the club one game ahead of third-place Dallas (2-5) and one and one-half games in front of fourth-place Kansas City. The Sidekicks trail first-place Milwaukee by five games while the Wave holds a five and one-half game advantage on the Comets.
In Eastern Conference action, the Philadelphia Kixx went 2-0 last week with a 17-10 home win over Baltimore on November 2 and a 6-4 (OT) win at Harrisburg on November 3. Philadelphia (6-2) now holds a two-game lead over both Cleveland (3-3) and Harrisburg (3-3) in the Eastern Conference standings while enjoying a three and one-half game advantage over Baltimore (2-5).
While Harrisburg was unable to post a win over Philadelphia on November 3, the Heat did open the home portion of the club's 2002-03 season in winning fashion with an 18-14 victory over Dallas on November 2. Marco Coria and Ato Leone each posted six points as the Heat evened its season series with the Sidekicks at one game apiece.
FARIAS RECLAIMS SPALDING SCORING LEAD...
San Diego forward Carlos Farias made the most out of the Sockers lone contest last week by posting three goals, two assists, and eight points in San Diego's 22-21 win over Kansas City. The eight-point outing moved Farias back to the top of the Spalding scoring list with 27 points in seven games played. Farias holds a three-point advantage on Milwaukee's Joe Reiniger, a four-point lead Kansas City's Dino Delevski, a five-point cushion on Baltimore's Paul Wright, and a six-point spread on Milwaukee's Greg Howes.
DASILVA AND PAPPAS EARN WEEKLY HONORS... Offensive: Kansas City forward Nino DaSilva has been named the MISL Offensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending November 3. DaSilva receives the award after posting four 2-point goals, two assists, and 10 points in the Comet's 22-21 loss at San Diego on November 2.
DaSilva's performance vs. the Sockers kept Kansas City in an entertaining contest and included a fourth-quarter goal that gave the Comets a lead that the team held until 13:06 of the final frame. DaSilva participated in six of Kansas City's 10 goals and played a part in 60% of the team's total offense.
The 23-year-old son of former indoor star Nilton DaSilva (Batata) is currently tied for sixth in MISL scoring with 19 points and is tied for fifth in 2-point goals with seven. Others Receiving Consideration:
San Diego forward Carlos Farias posted three 2-point goals, two assists, and eight points in the Sockers' 22-21 victory over Kansas City on November 2.
Sockers' defender Alejandro Cardenas registered a 3-point goal, two 2-point scores, an assist, and eight points in San Diego's one-point victory over the Comets.
Philadelphia forward Chris Handsor recorded a 3-point goal, a 2-point tally, and three assists for eight points to lead the Kixx to a 17-10 win over Baltimore on November 2.
Defensive:
Philadelphia goalkeeper Peter Pappas has been named the MISL Defensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending November 3. Pappas receives the award after going 2-0 with a 6.92 points against average and a .759 save percentage in two outings last week.
Pappas opened the week by registering a 15-save performance during the Kixx's 17-10 win over Baltimore on November 2 and then posted a 6-4 (OT) win at Harrisburg on November 3. The Toronto native added three assists on the week, including a dish to Philadelphia player/coach Don D'Ambra for the game-winning goal in overtime at Harrisburg.
The five-time all-star is second in the MISL in both victories with five and minutes played with 422. Pappas also ranks third in both saves (79) and points against average (9.66).
Others Receiving Consideration: Milwaukee goalkeeper Victor Nogueira allowed just two goals in the Wave's 17-4 win over Cleveland on November 3.
Harrisburg defender Genoni Martinez registered four blocks in the Heat's 18-14 win over Dallas on November 2. Martinez also posted a goal, an assist, and three points in the game.

Chris Handsor recorded eight points as the Philadelphia Kixx defeated the Baltimore Blast, 17-10, at the First Union Spectrum on Saturday, November 2. Joe Scigliano gave Philadelphia an early 2-0 lead with a 2-point goal at 1:16 of the first quarter, but P.J. Wakefield (2:18), Dewan Bader (3:04), and Gino DiFlorio (4:08) answered with 2-pointers for the Blast to give Baltimore a 6-2 lead through first-quarter action. In the second, Shawn Boney (19 seconds), Joel Shanker (3:36), Handsor (3-pointer, 7:02), and Pat Morris (8:40, 14:24) each scored for the home team during a 9-0 Philadelphia run to give the Kixx a 13-6 halftime lead. Handsor then bagged the only goal of the third quarter with a deuce at 2:29 before P.J. Wakefield stopped the Philadelphia flurry with a 2-point goal at 10:28 of the fourth. Shanker (11:42) and Denison Cabral( 14:58) then exchanged 2-point goals to conclude the scoring. Handsor led all scorers with a 3-point goal, a 2-point tally, and three assists for eight points. Wakefield paced Baltimore with a pair of 2-point goals, an assist, and five points. Peter Pappas (15 saves) earned the win in goal for Philadelphia while Brett Phillips (13 stops) took the loss for Baltimore.

Marco Coria and Ato Leone each posted six points as the Harrisburg Heat downed the Dallas Sidekicks, 18-14, at the PA State Farm Show Arena on Saturday, November 2. The Heat took a 2-0 lead on a David Bascome 2-pointer at 6:24 of the first before Antonio Sutton equaled the score with a deuce at 12:40. Harrisburg rookie Horacio Robledo then gave Harrisburg a 4-2 lead through one-quarter of play with a 2-pointer at 14:48. After Tatu tied the score with a 2-point strike at the 59-second mark of the second quarter, Leone registered a 3-pointer at 7:28 and Genoni Martinez added a deuce at 14:40 as the Heat hit the half ahead, 9-4. In the third, Coria made it 11-4 with a 2-point goal at 8:10, but David Doyle struck for a 3-pointer at 11:04 to make it an 11-7 contest. Following a Leone deuce at 12:58, Sutton posted his second 2-point tally of the game at 14:47 to get the Sidekicks within four at 13-9 through 45 minutes of play. Daniel Barber then connected at the 40-second mark of the fourth to bring Dallas within two at 13-11, but David Barbosa answered with a 2-pointer at 5:09 to push the Heat ahead, 15-11. Following a Leo Pernia 3-point sixth-attacker goal at 11:08, Coria ended the drama by rolling in a 3-point strike with 51 seconds remaining to give Harrisburg the victory in the club's 2002-03 home opener. Carlos "Chile" Farias scored the game-winning 2-point goal at 13:39 of the fourth quarter as the San Diego Sockers downed the Kansas City Comets, 22-21, in front of a crowd of 7,524 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena on Saturday, November 2. Robbie Aristodemo opened the scoring with a 2-point goal at 1:26 of the first quarter before Dino Delevski (4:26) and Nino DaSilva posted consecutive 2-point goals (7:27, 8:52) to give the Comets a 6-2 lead. Following a 2-pointer from Nathan Hetherington at 9:29 and an Alejandro Cardenas 3-point strike (10:04), Nikola Vignjevic (13:27) ended the first quarter scoring with a 2-point goal, which put Kansas City ahead, 8-7. Nick Corneli (2-pointer, 4:11) and Shawn Beyer (3-pointer, 4:33) exchanged goals before DaSilva (2-pointer, 10:12) and Delevski (3-pointer, 14:26) concluded the second quarter scoring with the Comets up, 15-10, at the half. In the third, Matthew Stewart (1:41) and Farias (8:19) posted back-to-back 2-pointers to bring the Sockers within one at 15-14. Miodrag Djerisilo pushed the Comets back in front by three with a 2-point goal at 13:43, but Cardenas answered just eight seconds later with a deuce of his own to pull San Diego back within one at 17-16. Cardenas then opened the fourth with a 2-point goal at the 45-second mark to give San Diego its first lead since the defender's 3-pointer at 10:04 of the first quarter. DaSilva then struck for a 2-point tally at 3:51 to give the lead back to Kansas City at 19-18. That set the stage for Farias who bagged back-to-back 2-pointers at 13:06 and 13:39 before Nate Houser struck for a sixth attacker 2-pointer at 14:14 to produce the 22-21 final. Farias and Cardenas led San Diego with eight points while DaSilva paced Kansas City with 10 points. D.J. Horvath earned the win in goal for San Diego with 23 saves. Wes Wade, on as the sixth attacker when Farias notched the game-winner, took the loss in goal for Kansas City.

Sipho Sibiya scored a pair of goals as the Milwaukee Wave defeated the Cleveland Force, 17-4, in front of a crowd of 6,019 at the Bradley Center on Sunday, November 3. Milwaukee built an 8-0 halftime lead and a 13-0 third quarter advantage to control the contest throughout. Joe Reiniger opened the scoring with a 2-point goal at 10:45 of the first quarter before Sibiya (7:21) started a 6-0 second quarter run for the Wave. Johnny Torres (7:54), and Sibiya's second 2-pointer at 12:03 gave the Wave the eight-point lead at the break before Greg Howes quickly made it a 10-0 Milwaukee advantage with a deuce at the 28-second mark of the third frame. Following a Pat White 3-pointer at 4:11, Justin Evans (13:50) got the Force on the board with a 2-point goal prior to John Ball opening the fourth quarter scoring with a 2-point strike at 1:26. That would be it for the Cleveland offense, though, as Leighton O'Brien (9:51) and Michael King (12:25) put an explanation mark on the Milwaukee victory with late 2-point goals. Victor Nogueira (seven saves) got the win in goal for the Wave while Jim Larkin (18 stops) took the loss for Cleveland.

Don D'Ambra scored the game-winning goal with just eight seconds gone in overtime as the Philadelphia Kixx downed the Harrisburg Heat, 6-4, at the PA State Farm Show Arena on Sunday, November 3. Philadelphia never trailed in a tightly played contest as Gary DePalma scored the game's opening goal at 8:53 of the first quarter. After Genoni Martinez tied the score at two with a deuce at 2:45 of the second, Joe Scigliano re-claimed the Philadelphia lead with a 2-point strike at 9:58. Following a scoreless third quarter, Renato Pereira tied the game and forced overtime with a 2-pointer at 5:25 of the fourth. That set the stage for D'Ambra who took the opening kick-off, passed it back to goalkeeper Peter Pappas, and then received a long Pappas dish and beat Heat goalkeeper Raul Salas for the game-winner. DePalma, Scigliano, and D'Ambra each had two points to lead Philadelphia while Martinez and Pereira added 2-point goals for Harrisburg. Pappas (seven saves) earned the win in the Kixx goal while Salas (five stops) took the loss for Harrisburg.
COMETS-SOCKERS CONTEST SETS OFFENSIVE STANDARD...
The Kansas City at San Diego game on November 2, which was won by the Sockers, 22-21, was the highest scoring game of the 2002-03 season to date. The 43-combined points was the most in a MISL contest since Milwaukee and Kansas City combined for 45 points (Mil 23, at KC 22) on April 13, 2002.
The 86 combined shots in the Comets-Sockers contest (KC 49, SD 36) also set a 2002-03 MISL single-game high.
TEAM CAPSULES (October 28 â November 3, 2002)
Baltimore Blast (2-5)
The Blast dropped a 17-10 decision at Philadelphia on November 2 in the club's only action of the week. Brett Phillips made his 2002-03 Blast debut and made 13 saves. Paul Wright added two assists in the contest and now leads the MISL in assists with eight. Wright also ranks fourth in scoring with 22 points and is tied for fifth in 2-point goals with seven. Rookie P.J. Wakefield continues to produce. Wakefield posted a pair of 2-point goals, an assist, and five points in Philadelphia and is now tied for eighth in League scoring with 18 points while being tied for fifth in total goals with eight and fifth in 2-point goals with seven. Denison Cabral is tied for first in the MISL in restart goals with three while Jason Dieter is tied for the League lead in blocks with 19. Sean Bowers is tied for third in blocks with 14. Scott Hileman did not play in Philadelphia, but continues to rank among the League leaders in numerous categories. Hileman is third in minutes played (362), tied for fourth in saves (77), and ranks fifth in points against average (10.09). Baltimore will host Philadelphia on November 8 before traveling to Harrisburg one day later on November 9.The Blast will return to the 1st Mariner Arena to welcome Milwaukee on November 15.

Cleveland Force (3-3)
The Force fell, 17-4, at Milwaukee on November 3 in the club's only action of the week. John Ball and Justin Evans posted 2-point goals in the contest for Cleveland. Ball ranks second on the Force roster with 12 points while Evans is third with six points. Ball is also tied for the League-lead in sixth attacker goals with two. Hector Marinaro, who posted an assist in Milwaukee, is tied for 11th in MISL scoring with 17 points. Marinaro is also third in game-winning goals with two. Jim Larkin took the loss vs. the Wave, but made 18 saves in the game and leads the MISL with 96 stops on the season. Larkin also ranks among the MISL leaders in various other statistical categories including wins (third with three), minutes played (fourth with 356), and save percentage (fifth at .756). Cleveland, which is undefeated at home (2-0), will play two of the club's next three at the Convo. The Force will entertain the Kixx on November 9 before traveling to Philadelphia on November 16. Cleveland will then return home to host Harrisburg on November 22.

Dallas Sidekicks (2-5)
The Sidekicks lost, 18-14, at Harrisburg on November 2 in the team's lone game of the week. Tatu posted three points in Harrisburg and is tied with teammate Patrick Shamu among others for 11th in MISL scoring with 17 points. Antonio Sutton had four points vs. the Heat and is tied for 15th in League scoring with 16 points. Sutton is also one of just four players in the MISL to record a short-handed goal to date this season. Brad Flanagan is tied for third in the League with 14 blocks while goalkeeper Sagu is tied for fourth in saves with 77 and ranks fifth in minutes with 337. Sagu ranks seventh in points against average at 11.72. Dallas, which has gone 2-2 at home and 0-3 on the road, will play five of the club's next six games and seven of the club's next nine contests inside the friendly confines of Reunion Arena. The Sidekicks will welcome Kansas City for a "School Day Game" on November 6 before entertaining San Diego on November 9. Dallas will then travel to San Diego on November 10 before returning home for three straight outings, beginning on November 24 and concluding on November 30.

Harrisburg Heat (3-3)
The Heat went 1-1 last week to remain at .500 on the season. Harrisburg downed Dallas, 18-14, on November 2 before dropping a 6-4 (OT) decision to Philadelphia on November 3. Balanced scoring and defense continue to be a Heat trademark during the 2002-03 season. Harrisburg scored a total of 10 goals last week and eight of those tallies came off the foot of a different Heat player. Marco Coria has taken over the team's scoring lead and is tied for eighth in the MISL with 18 points. Coria is also tied for second in the League in assists with seven. David Bascome is second on the club roster in scoring with 14 points and is second in the MISL in power play goals with four. The Heat special teams continue to play well as the Harrisburg penalty kill is the League's best and has yet to surrender a goal this season (4-4). The Heat power play is ranked second in the MISL at six for 10 (60%). Harrisburg's defense, after allowing a total of 20 points in two games last week, is now third in the MISL, surrendering 10.3 points per game. Doug Petras is ranked third in save percentage (.772) and fourth in points against average (10.06). The Heat will conclude the club's current four-game homestand with dates vs. Baltimore on November 9 and Kansas City on November 10 before hitting the road to face Cleveland on November 22.

Kansas City Comets (1-5)
The Comets continued to score points, but dropped the club's fifth decision in six outings by way of a 22-21 loss at San Diego on November 2. Nino DaSilva posted 10 points in the contest and is tied for sixth in League scoring with 19 points. DaSilva is also tied for fifth in the MISL in 2-point goals with seven. Dino Delevski added six points in San Diego and is third in MISL scoring with 23 points. Delevski is also tied for fifth in total goals with eight and is tied for the League lead in 3-point goals with two. Nate Houser is tied for sixth in League scoring with 19 points and leads the MISL in 2-point goals with nine. Houser is also tied for third in total goals with nine. Goalkeeper Paolo Ceccarelli is fourth in save percentage at .762 while Chad James is one of four MISL players to record a short-handed goal this season. The Comets power play continues to click, having found the net on seven of 11 opportunities (63.6%) this season to lead the League in power play efficiency. Kansas City's offense has also found its groove, ranking second in the MISL at 13.2 points per contest. The Comets will continue the club's current seven-game road swing with dates at Dallas (November 6), at Milwaukee (November 8), and at Harrisburg (November 10).

Milwaukee Wave (7-0)
The Wave remained perfect on the season with a 17-4 win over Cleveland on November 3. Victor Nogueira earned the win in goal while surpassing the 40,000-minute mark for his career. Nogueira leads the MISL in all but one of the League's major goalkeeping statistical categories. Nogueira is the League leader in wins (7), minutes (432), save percentage (.784), and points against average (7.35). The 2001-02 Goalkeeper of the Year ranks second in saves with 91. Joe Reiniger posted two points in the win over the Force and now ranks second in scoring with 24 points. Reiniger is also tied for the MISL lead in total goals with 10 and 3-point goals with two. Reiniger leads the MISL in power play goals with five and is tied for the League lead in restart goals with three. Greg Howes is fifth in MISL scoring with 21 points and is tied for second in 2-point goals with eight. Howes is also tied for third in total goals with nine. The Milwaukee offense and defense continue to lead the League. The Wave is averaging 15.6 points per game while allowing 7.6. Milwaukee has outscored opponents a combined 109-53 on the season. The Wave will host Kansas City on November 8 before traveling to Baltimore on November 15. Milwaukee will then return home to entertain San Diego on November 16.

The Kixx ran the club's current winning streak to three games with a pair of victories last week. Philadelphia posted a 17-10 win over Baltimore on November 2 before registering a 6-4 (OT) triumph at Harrisburg on November 3. Joe Shanker posted five points last week and is tied for eighth in MISL scoring with 18 points. Gary DePalma is tied for 11th in MISL scoring with 17 points while Chris Handsor is tied for 15th with 16 points. DePalma is also tied for the League lead in 3-point goals with two. Pat Morris is tied for second in assists with seven while Glenn Carbonara is fifth in blocks with 13. Peter Pappas is second in the League in wins with five and in minutes played with 422 while ranking third in points against average at 9.66 and saves with 79. The Kixx are now 3-1 under interim head coach Don D'Ambra and boast the MISL's second best defense, allowing 10 points per game. Philadelphia will travel to Baltimore on November 8 and Cleveland on November 9 before returning home to welcome the Force on November 16.

The Sockers moved into sole possession of second place in the Western Conference with a 22-21 victory over Kansas City on November 2. Carlo Farias posted eight points to take over the Spalding scoring lead with 27 points.
