Millrats Melt Blizzard
January 27, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Saint John Riptide News Release
Framingham, MA: The snow was falling outside the Fieldhouse on campus of Southern New Hampshire University, but inside it was all fire from the Manchester Millrats as they melted the Boston Blizzard 143-82 for their fourth straight victory.
The Millrats (17-9) erupted for forty-one points in the first quarter and finished with their largest scoring output of the season (143).
Forward P.J. Young, a former Manchester Central and Southern New Hampshire University standout, scored a game-high 24 points as seven players reached double figures for the winners.
Guard Anthony Anderson, coming off a 43-point effort on Saturday night, nailed six threes and had 22 points for Manchester in the first 28 minutes of the game. Richmond Pittman, Jr., netted 20 points in 19 minutes, and former Providence College standout Rob Sanders chipped in 16 points with several crowd-pleasing slam dunks.
Some familiar faces played for Boston (6-14), including Winnacunnet of Hampton grad Chris Coates, who scored 19 points including four 3-pointers. Mike Konovelchick from Alvirne of Hudson added four points. Chris Tardif from Timberlane of Plaistow also played for the Blizzard today.
The Millrats defense did a fine job against high-scoring guard Charles Easterling, who scored 19 points but only on 5-for-22 shooting.
Manchester's new addition, 6'9 Ronald Wright had the team's only double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
Kevin Gray of the New Hampshire Union Leader, who played under the ABA's "13th Man" rule, made his professional basketball debut and scored two points on a floater in the paint that brought the crowd alive. Gray is the first such "13th Man" celebrity guest to ever score in a Millrats game.
The Millrats are now preparing to face the arch-rival Vermont Frost Heaves on Saturday (7:05 p.m.) at SNHU. Defending champion Vermont is currently ranked No. 1 in the ABA, while Manchester sits at No. 5. Vermont defeated the Millrats back on January 12th 109-99 in a game that was cut short due to several altercations, but Manchester leads the season series 3-2 so far.
