(London, ON): The Saint John Mill Rats claimed their first win of the NBL Canada season, rallying to defeat the previously undefeated and #1 ranked London Lightning, 96-86 at the John LeBatt Centre in London, Ontario.
The Mill Rats attacked the home team early and garnered a gritty 26-17 first quarter lead. In the second quarter the Lightning responded with an attack over there own, going on a 14-4 run to take a 31-30 lead by the mid quarter mark. London kept up the pressure behind the home crowd and took a 41-35 lead into halftime.
London's Gabe Freeman nailed two three pointers to give London its largest lead of the game at 55-43, but then the Mill Rats came to life. Three pointers by Will Blalock and Steve Deluca, followed by consecutive layups by Antoine Tisby and Anthony Anderson completed a key 21-04 run to give Saint John a 64-59 lead. The Mill Rats led 64-61 to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter Steve Deluca caught fire nailing three pointer after three pointer, while the Mill Rats guards Anthony Anderson and Will Blalock kept up their attack. Antoine Tisby and PJ Young gave Saint John a presence in the paint down the stretch and came up with numerous key stops and loose balls to preserve the win.
Anderson and Deluca led the Mill Rats in the scoring column with 20 points a piece, closely followed by Tisby and Blalock with 19 each. PJ Young added 12 points while Tisby also had 14 rebounds. DeAnthony Bowden led London with 26 points.
"It was a great road win for our team as we did not want to start off this five game road trip with another loss," stated Mill Rats Head Coach Jaren Jackson. "And to do it after trailing by double digits in the second half in hostile territory, shows this team is capable of something special."
With the win Saint John improves to 1-3 on the season while London is now 4-1.
The Mill Rats head down the 401 to take on the Oshawa Power on Monday night at 7:00pm EST. Check out the website for updates on how to watch the game live.
