Saint John Riptide News Release

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats have moved reigning League MVP Anthony Anderson to Injured Reserve, and have signed 6'5 guard Keith Cothran in his place, pending FIBA clearance.

Cothran averaged 14.3 points. 3.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game at the University of Rhode Island his senior season 2009-2010. He has since played professionally in Iceland, Angola, and Morocco.

In 2012, Cothran was in the wrong place at the wrong time, sitting in someone else's car in Hartford, Connecticut when a hail of gunfire was blasted into the vehicle. Miraculously, Cothran was not hit directly but a bullet ricocheted off the dashboard and lodged itself in his forehead. He was rushed to the hospital, but was back playing basketball in two weeks.

Cothran was named Finals MVP of the Greater Hartford Pro Am this past summer, scoring 37 points in the deciding game against a team with former Mill Rat Doug Herring Jr and former Windsor Express guard Stefan Bonneau.

"Beefy (his nickname) is a kid who came from a tough neighborhood and rose above everything to earn a college degree and create a basketball career for himself," said Mill Rats President & General Manager Ian McCarthy. "I've been recruiting him for several years and am excited he has decided to come to our team."

Cothran will take Anderson's spot on the Active Roster, and once the League MVP returns, a decision will be made from there.

"We also felt it was important not to rush AA back. A calf tear is something you don't want to try and return from too quickly," said McCarthy. "Cothran gives us a player who will have enough games under his belt to play in the playoffs as an insurance policy for AA or someone else who may get hurt."

The Mill Rats next home game is Saturday January 24th at 7pm at Harbour Station against the Moncton Miracles. Get your tickets at www.harbourstation.ca or call 657-1234.
