Philadelphia Charge News Release

VILLANOVA, PA (July 24, 2002) - Tiffeny Milbrett had two goals to lead the New York Power over the Philadelphia Charge, 3-2, at Villanova Stadium on Wednesday night. Mandy Clemens and Liu Ailing each scored for the Charge (10-2-4, 34pts), who remain in first place in the WUSA standings despite suffering their first loss since May 19 at San Diego. Philadelphia's 10-game unbeaten streak, which was tied for the longest in league history, was halted.

Milbrett now has six career goals against the Charge, as New York (2-13-1, 10pts) ended its league-worst nine-game losing streak.

The Charge lost for only the second time in 18 chances in franchise history when scoring first.

Philadelphia scored the first goal of the game in the 61st minute. On a short corner kick, Clemens passed the ball to Lorrie Fair, who immediately gave it back to an overlapping Clemens. Clemens took one touch, turned and took the shot from outside the box, over the head of Power goalie Saskia Webber. It was Clemens' second goal of the season and Fair's fourth assist.

The Charge took a 2-0 lead in the 79th minute on Liu Ailing's first goal of the season. Zhao Lihong crossed the ball from the right flank, and after it appeared Webber got a piece of it, the ball went to Liu's foot and she hammered it home. For Zhao, it was her fifth assist of the season and fifth straight game recording at least one point (1g, 4a).

The Power then scored three goals over a span of less than four minutes. First, in the 83rd minute, Milbrett broke free down the middle of the field and fired an unassisted goal over the head of Philadelphia goalie Melissa Moore.

New York tied the game in the 84th minute when Justi Baumgardt took a shot off the crossbar that redirected to Emily Janss, who knocked in the rebound. Baumgardt recorded her second assist of the year. Janss' goal was her sixth of the season.

The Power then took the lead for good three minutes later when Minna Mustonen passed to Milbrett, who scored her second goal of the game by going one-on-one with Moore and winning the battle by putting the ball in the back of the net. It was Milbrett's 10th goal of the year and Mustonen's second assist of the season. Milbrett only played 33 minutes.

The Charge out-shot the Power, 9-2, in the first half. Philadelphia had a Marinette Pichon goal disallowed in the 16th minute when she was ruled offsides.

Charge's Erica Iverson headed a shot wide right during stoppage time in the second half that would have tied the game.

The Charge defeated the Power in their first two meetings. They won a 2-1 decision in New York in April and 3-1 at home earlier this month.

The Charge will play their third game in eight days when they travel to Boston on Saturday, July 31 at 7 p.m. Philadelphia defeated Boston twice at home this season, 4-2 and 1-0. The Charge will go from Boston to San Jose to play a Wednesday night game on July 31.

Philadelphia returns home on Saturday August 3 at 7 p.m. to play the San Diego Spirit. Call the Charge ticket office at 215-467-GOAL to inquire about tickets and any special promotions.
