Mikey Powell named as MLL's Offensive Player of the Week

June 30, 2008 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

BOSTON, Mass. - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending June 29, 2008, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Boston Cannons attackman Mikey Powell was named as the Offensive Player of the Week while Long Island Lizards midfielder Peter Vlahakis earned his third Defensive Player of the Week award this season.

Philadelphia Barrage netminder Brian Dougherty received the Goalkeeper of the Week honor while Los Angeles Riptide attackman Kevin Huntley was selected as the Cascade Rookie of the Week.

Powell earned Bud Light MVP honors after leading the Cannons to a 21-14 victory over the San Francisco Dragons on Saturday night. He scored three goals and added five assists as Boston won its third straight game.

In four games this season, the former Syracuse University attackman has scored four goals with eight assists.

Vlahakis, who becomes the first player to win a weekly award three times this season, helped Long Island win its fifth straight game with a 16-9 victory over the New Jersey Pride at Yurcak Field on Saturday night. He won 20 of 29 face-offs and also had nine ground balls.

Vlahakis leads the MLL with 144 face-off wins and also has a league-high 51 ground balls in seven games. He has also scored three goals with two assists for the Eastern Conference-leading Lizards.

After a slow start, Dougherty led the defending MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage to their second win in the last three games, a 14-13 victory over the Washington Bayhawks on Saturday night. He made 24 saves in the victory, including 15 in the first half, as the Barrage overcame a 5-0 first quarter deficit.

The MLL's all-time leader in goalkeeper wins, Dougherty ranks third in the MLL with 121 saves while stopping 55.0 per cent of the shots he has faced, which is good for fourth place in the league.

Huntley scored a game-high five goals to lead the Los Angeles Riptide to a 15-10 victory over the Rochester Rattlers at PAETEC Park on Saturday night. It was the first five-goal game of his brief MLL career.

Selected with the 17th overall pick in the Collegiate Draft, Huntley was traded to the Riptide from San Francisco. He led the Johns Hopkins University lacrosse team to the NCAA title game in May and had four five-goal games in his college career.
