Greeneville Astros News Release
Kingsport, TN - The Kingsport Mets (15-23) headed into Sunday at the bottom of the Appalachian League West standings, but they defeated the first place Greeneville Astros (20-18) behind a four-run eighth inning.
The Astros got the scoring started early in the back-and-forth affair with heads-up base running by centerfielder Frankeny Fernandez in the first inning. After Fernandez singled to get on base, he stole second and third before heading home on a missed catch error at third.
Over the next few innings, the Mets got a RBI double from Dionis Rodriguez in the second to even the score before Walter Rasquin scored on an Astros error in the fourth to give them a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Astros first baseman Connor MacDonald connected on a two-run homer. However, the Mets answered in the bottom of the inning on a Reed Gamache sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams scored again in the sixth as Jonathan Arauz, who went three-for-three on the afternoon, lined a two-run double into centerfield. Then, Rasquin got one of those runs back for the Mets in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single to leave the Astros on top, 5-4.
The Astros carried their one-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but that is when the game shifted in the Mets favor. After forcing a ground out to start the inning, the next two batters were walked before a Jose Miguel Medina single loaded the bases. Another walk brought in the tying run.
After the Astros made a pitching change, with the bases still loaded, Ian Strom knocked in all three baserunners on a line drive double into right field. Those runs proved to be the difference as the Mets won the game, 8-5.
Mets reliever Ronald Guedez (2-0) was awarded the win after pitching the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
The Astros will face the Mets in game two of the series in Kingsport on Monday at 7:00pm. Left-hander Salvador Montano (1-1) will get the start for the Astros against Adonis Uceta (2-4) of the Mets.
