Menyongar named captain of Liberian National Team

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Monday, September 20, 2004) -- It was announced today by the Liberian Football Federation that five-year veteran Minnesota Thunder forward Johnny Menyongar has been named the team captain of the Liberian National Team. Menyongar will make his captain debut in Liberia against Senegal in World Cup Qualifying on Oct. 10.

Menyongar has participated with the Liberian National Team since 1994 when he was just 15 years old. Now at age 25, Menyongar is ready for the task of team captain.

"It's a great honor to be the captain of the [Liberian] National Team," said Menyongar. "There is no greater feeling than representing your country. Some guys on the team are older than me, but it all comes down to respect. If you give the guys around you respect, they will give it back."

Menyongar has some familiar faces on the National Team as fellow Thunder forwards Melvin Tarley and Francis Doe are also members of the squad. All three players started in a 1-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Zambia on Sept. 4 and all are expected to start against Senegal.

African World Cup qualifying is broken down into five groups, each consisting of six teams. The winner of each group will qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Liberia is in Group One and will face Congo, Senegal, Zambia, Togo and Mali on a home and away basis for a total of 10 games. After four games played, Liberia is in third place in Group One with four points (1-1-2), trailing Togo, Senegal, and Zambia by just three points.

2. BUCHHOLZ PROMOTED TO DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

Djorn Buchholz has been promoted to Director of Marketing, the Thunder announced today. Buchholz, originally from Hastings, Neb., has been with the Thunder since last November.

Since his arrival, the Thunder has added six new corporate partners, including Bremer Bank, Pepsi, American Family Insurance, Select Comfort, Metro Transit, and Best Western Kelly Inn.

"Djorn has played a key role in launching our successful ‘Soccer in the City' campaign this year," said Thunder President and General Manager Jim Froslid. "He is a rising star who, moving forward, will have a strong impact on the Thunder."
