Memphis solidifies top spot in week three coaches poll

Published on April 12, 2006 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The Memphis Xplorers received 255 points and 19-of-23 first place votes to remain in first place in the Week 3 Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. The defending ArenaCup champion Xplorers (2-0) defeated the Florida Firecats (ranked No. 3 in Week 2 Poll) at home this past weekend in convincing fashion, 78-46, to solidify their claim to the top spot for the third straight week.

The Manchester Wolves, who entered Week 2 at number two, dropped eight spots to 10th overall after losing their home opener to Green Bay. Replacing Manchester this week at No. 2 is the Arkansas Twisters, who moved up three spots on the strength of their 58-20 home win against Amarillo Saturday night. The Twisters (199 points, 2 first place votes), currently 2-0, are off to their best start in team history. Rounding out the top five are the undefeated Albany Conquest (2-0), Central Valley Coyotes (2-0) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (1-0). The Spokane Shock, also perfect through two games, recorded the biggest jump of the week, moving up six spots to No. 6 overall (132 points). The Week 4 schedule features two matchups of Top 12 teams. Both games are Friday night affairs between East Division rivals (No. 5 W-B/Sranton vs. No. 3 Albany, No. 10 Manchester vs. No. 12 Louisville).

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 12 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
