TODAY'S HEADLINES

The Memphis Express took part in padded practice on Wednesday at Cornerstone Christian School, hitting the field for 90 minutes beginning at 10:00 am CT.

On Wednesday the coaching staff emphasized the run game through 7-on-7s, 11-on-11s, and red zone, utilizing a variety of looks and short passing through screens and into the flats.

HIGHLIGHTS

WR Kayaune Ross (Kentucky) kept his streak of big plays going, hauling in an over-the-shoulder grab deep downfield, and a grab sliding to his knees in 7-on-7 work. WR Dontez Byrd (Tennessee Tech) continues to get acclimated to his new surroundings, connecting with QB Brandon Silvers (Troy) with a diving catch on a post in 7-on-7s.

WR Drew Morgan (Arkansas) finished a sensational juggling catch over the middle from QB Brandon Silvers (Troy) in 11-on-11. QB Christian Hackenberg (Penn State) targeted WR Pig Howard (Tennessee) on a 35-yard completion from a designed play-action rollout in a 2nd-and-7 situation. QB Zach Mettenberger (LSU) hit WR Fabian Guerra (Fairmont State) 40 yards downfield on a deep post taken to the house.

In the red zone, QB Troy Cook (UT-Martin) found WR Fabian Guerra (Fairmont State) on a drag route for a gain of 12. QB Christian Hackenberg (Penn State) delivered a five-yard touchdown strike to WR Chris Givens (Wake Forest).

QUOTES

Head Coach Mike Singletary on the overall feeling of Wednesday's practice: "Just another day to get better. They're still competing. Glad we had no major injuries coming out of practice as we head into the scrimmage this weekend. We wanted to get a look at the running game and put an emphasis on that today to see how it worked out, not bad."

Head Coach Mike Singletary on whether a single running back has emerged in the competition for a workhorse role: "No, right now they're all working hard. Coach Knott is doing a good job with them. One of the guys we had was playing tight end, we've moved him over to try and take a look at him, so it's coming along. Versatility is one of the best things you can have as a player. The more you can do, the better. We'll just have to keep working on it."
