
Mellgren Named Player of the Week

ATLANTA (Monday, July 14, 2003) - Boston's Dagny Mellgren has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending July 13, 2003. Mellgren netted her first career hat trick and led the Breakers to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Charge on Sunday, July 13. A member of the Norwegian national team, Mellgren is the WUSA career leader for goals scored (32) and is tied for first in the WUSA for both goals (10) and points (22) in 2003.
Mellgren struck three times against the Charge, taking three shots and scoring three goals in a 49-minute span. Her first goal of the game came during the 16th minute of play as she received a through ball at the top of the penalty area and buried it into the back of the net to put the Breakers up 1-0. Before the Charge had time to retaliate, Mellgren scored again. In the 45th minute, Mellgren connected on a cross from Maren Meinert to blast a header past Charge goalkeeper Melissa Moore. With the Breakers up 2-0, Mellgren's scoring streak was not quite over. In the 65th minute, Mellgren received the ball at the edge of the area, blasting it into the back of the net to score her third goal of the night.
Mellgren has scored 40 percent of the Breaker's goals this season (10 out of 25) and has been involved in 48 percent (12 out of 25) of the Breakers' goals, by way of either a goal or an assist. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
Mellgren decisively won the title of Met-Rx Player of the week, receiving 24 first place votes and three second place votes, for a total of 51 points. Others players who received votes were Washington's Abby Wambach, Atlanta's Ifeoma Dieke, New York's Cheryl Salisbury and Shannon Boxx and Atlanta's Sharolta Nonen and Conny Pohlers.
