Meinert Named Player of the Week
June 9, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, June 9, 2003) - Boston Breakers forward Maren Meinert has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending June 8, 2003. Meinert scored two goals to give Boston a 3-1 victory over then-first place Washington on Sunday at RFK Stadium. The victory propelled Boston into first place in the WUSA standings.
With her two-goal performance, the former German national team star now leads the WUSA in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. In addition, Meinert is now tied with Carolina's Danielle Fotopoulos for first place in all-time regular season WUSA scoring with 73 points (26 goals, 21 assists). She has also scored a goal or notched an assist in eight consecutive matches, the longest current point streak in the WUSA.
Meinert's first goal came six minutes into the game when she took a ball from Stephanie Mugneret-Beghe in the box. Meinert held off a Freedom defender and placed the ball to the far post for a Breakers 1-0 lead. She scored the game-winner in the 29th minute when she won a battle in the box. Meinert chased a ball from Jena Kluegel in the box. Freedom keeper Siri Mullinix came out to clear the ball, but Meinert collided with a defender and the ball landed on her foot. The German standout pulled the ball back and scored from a difficult angle. Meinert had two great chances for a third goal, including one in the second half that Mullinix needed to stretch out and make a diving save.
Meinert's 30 points (19 first place, 1 second place) defeated New York's Margaret Tietjen (11 points). Others who received votes were Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon, Carolina's Birgit Prinz, Philadelphia's Melissa Moore, Carolina's Erin Baxter and Philadelphia's Stacey Tullock . The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
