Mavericks Venture to RIFL

March 4, 2010 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release


LAKE CHARLES, LA (March 4, 2010) - Earlier this week, the Southern Indoor Football League learned the ownership group of the Augusta Mavericks franchise signed a deal to join the newly formed Regional Indoor Football League (RIFL) in hopes of competing in 2010.

"Obviously the franchise was anxious to field a team this season and they believe competing in the RIFL give them the best opportunity to do so," says SIFL President Thom Hager.

With the news of Augusta joining the RIFL, Mr. Hager is very supportive as are the other owners of the SIFL. This was a brilliant strategy by the Augusta Mavericks Owner Erick Moore and Head Coach Cedric Roach as this will give the Mavericks the opportunity to taste competition in 2010.

Back in late January, Augusta Mavericks Erick Moore and SIFL President Hager reached an agreement that the club would be unable to field a team for the 2010 season and would instead host a couple of exhibition games to help create excitement in the Augusta area. In doing so, the club signed a participation agreement and is still slated to become the first expansion club admitted by the SIFL for the 2011 season.

"We understand Mr. Moore is enthusiastic to field a team in 2010 and with such a late launch the Mavericks would have had too many challenges to the deadline of the SIFL," continues Mr. Hager.

"By joining the Regional Indoor Football League we are just looking to bring as much football as we can provide for our hungry fans and the RILF helps fill in some more games for our 2010 season," says Augusta Mavericks Head Coach Cedric Roach. "We signed our participation agreement with the Southern Indoor Football League back in January and I'm completely satisfied in still joining the SIFL for 2011."

The RIFL currently has nine teams listed on their website and has released an unofficial 2010 schedule but with no dates.

The SIFL opening weekend is Saturday March 20th as the defending SIFL Champion Louisiana Swashbucklers host the Houston Lightning at 7:00pm. The weekend closes out with the Lafayette Wildcatters traveling to the Bi-Lo Center to tackle the Greenville Force on Sunday March 21st at 3:00pm.
