Matt Sauk scores Offensive Player of the Year

August 23, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - Louisville Fire quarterback MATT SAUK has been named Jostens Offensive Player of the Year, as voted on by af2 head coaches and beat writers.

Sauk, in his fourth season, rewrote the league record book on passing during the regular season by shattering three all-time records. Setting new marks for touchdowns (99), yards (4,489) and completions (408), Sauk led the Fire to an 11-5 record, three straight postseason wins and an appearance in the 2005 ArenaCup.

The former Utah State standout threw for nine touchdowns on two occasions, and he threw for six or more touchdowns in 11 of 16 games. Sauk's most impressive stretch of games came when the Fire needed him most, as he threw for 1,343 yards and 38 touchdowns with only three interceptions to guide his club to a season-ending five game win streak.

As the Fire entered the postseason, Sauk has turned his game up another notch, completing 81-of-108 passes for 868 yards and 23 touchdowns with no interceptions in just three games. He set a league record with 10 touchdown passes in the Conference Championship game against the defending ArenaCup Champion Florida Firecats last week and stands to become the most prolific passer in af2 postseason history.

Sauk posted a 118.01 passer rating (third best in af2) during the season and eclipsed the 300-yard mark in five games, amassing a season high 396 yards against Green Bay on June 18. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound signal-caller is the second player in af2 history to pass for more than 300 touchdowns for his career.

Including the postseason, Sauk earned Offensive Player of the Game accolades eight times. He was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week in Week 18 and for the Conference Championship Round.

Sauk's American Conference Champion Fire take on the National Conference Champion Memphis Xplorers in the 2005 ArenaCup on Saturday at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, La. Pregame festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. CST. Call (888) 277-5526, log onto www.arenacup.com or visit the CenturyTel Center box office for tickets.
