Newark, NJ â Friday, May 24, 2002 â The Newark Bears took game one of the three game series with the Nashua Pride by a score of 9-3 this evening, thanks to a pair of homeruns by Joe Mathis and a strong start from Mark Leiter.
Mathis who was 4-for-4 last night got things started again tonight as he led the game off with a solo homerun to give Newark a 1-0 lead. A single by Tom Hage later in the first would make it a 3-0 game. In the bottom of the fourth, Mathis struck again with a two run homerun to increase Newark's lead to 5-0. Wes Chamberlain then went deep in the bottom of the sixth to put the Bears on top 8-0.
Leiter (3-1) breezed through 7.2 innings allowing just three runs on six hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. Chris Thompson (1-1) who got the start for the Pride only lasted 3.2 innings as he let up five runs on eleven hits. Edgar Tovar would add his first homerun of the season in the eighth inning to put Newark on top by the final of 9-3. Pork Chop Pough hit his third homerun of the season in the seventh inning. The top three batters in the Newark line-up (Mathis, Tovar, and Chamberlain) were a combined 9-for-14 with 7 runs and 7 RBIs.
The Newark Bears and the Nashua Pride will play game two of this three game series tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. Saturday's game will conclude with Fireworks presented by IDT and Sunday's 1:35 pm start will be an Outback Steakhouse Kid's Day.
