
Mastovich Receives ECHL Outstanding Media Award

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced on Thursday that Mike Mastovich of
The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown, Pa. is the 2004-05 recipient of
the ECHL Outstanding Media Award.
The award is determined in a vote of league media members, media relations
directors and broadcasters.
Mastovich has covered the Johnstown Chiefs and the ECHL for 14 seasons as
the beat writer for The Tribune-Democrat while also serving as a
correspondent for several other publications, including The Hockey
News and Hockey Business News. He wrote an article for the
2002-03 ECHL Official Guide and Record Book commemorating the 15th
Anniversary of the ECHL and chronicled the first 10 seasons for the league
in 1997-98.
"The Tribune-Democrat staff and the Johnstown Chiefs players,
coaches, front office, owners and diehard fans have made covering the ECHL
an unforgettable experience over the past 14 seasons," Mastovich said.
"When you have beat writers in this league like Dave Eminian in Peoria, Len
Bardsley and Brian Compton in Trenton, Andy Kent and Ed Reed in Florida and
Matt Nevala in Alaska who have set such high standards, it is an honor to
be recognized by one's peers."
Mastovich received his master's degree in sports communications from
Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor's degree in journalism
from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Mastovich began his career
at the Tribune-Democrat in November 1986 after 14 months at the
Indiana (Pennsylvania) Gazette. He and his wife, Terry, live in Johnstown
with their children - Shelby (13), Michael (8) and Ryan (4).
