Blast Enjoy Smooth Sailing Against Wave, but Home Shutout Streak Ends

12/17/14 - The Baltimore Blast, one of three remaining undefeated teams in the MASL, passed their latest test with flying colors. The Milwaukee Wave came to town looking to spoil the Blast's home weekend double dip, but Baltimore emerged with two wins and a 6-0 record.

In the first game on Friday, the Blast used relentless high pressure to build an 11-0 halftime lead. By the time Luan Sales Oliveira scored at 1:40 of the third quarter, the Blast and goalkeeper William Vanzela had accrued a home shutout streak of 190:43, the equivalent of more than three games.

The Wave ran their scoring run to four straight goals to cut the lead to 11-8, but the Blast added a late empty net goal to seal the victory, 13-8.

Milwaukee started off better on Saturday and enjoyed a 6-2 lead in the first quarter, a lead that held firm until midway through the third quarter. Baltimore scored two goals to tie and then scored the first three goals in the fourth quarter for what would become an insurmountable 12-6 lead en route to a 14-10 win.

MASL Team of the Week

GK - William Vanzela, Baltimore Blast - The Blast goalkeeper won two more games to improve to 6-0 even though his 190:43 home shutout streak ended Friday against Milwaukee. Vanzela is 34-8 lifetime in his third season with Baltimore. His 2.33 GAA is more than a goal better than second place Jose Bontti's 3.50 mark.

D - Damian Garcia, Oxford City FC of Texas - Garcia was one of Oxford City's key acquisitions as the team has upgraded its roster throughout the season. His goal and four assists against Tulsa on Saturday helped improve the team's record to 3-1 since they signed him away from the Wichita B-52s. His goal (see video below) on a one-timer from near midfield was one of the week's biggest highlights.

D - Chad Vandegriffe, St. Louis Ambush - Vandegriffe is the Ambush's defensive specialist. The St. Louis native and second year player is second in the MASL with 14 blocked shots and helped lead the Ambush to a 7-6 win over the Detroit Waza Flo on Saturday's ESPN3 Game of the Week.

F - Gordy Gurson, Seattle Impact - The MASL's "new kid" continues to take the league by storm in his rookie season. With six goals and four assists in two games last weekend, the 22-year old now leads the MASL with 23 goals and is second with 31 points.

F - Kraig Chiles, San Diego Sockers - The three time MASL MVP hasn't been scoring at the clip that produced a league record 56 goals and 72 points in 2012/13, but he scored a season-high six goals and an assist in a 17-10 win over the Seattle Impact Saturday. Chiles now has points in 52 consecutive games.

F - Lucas Roque, Baltimore Blast - The Blast have the 5th best offense in the MASL, but their balanced attack doesn't have any individual players in the top 27 in points. Their leading scorer is Roque, who had four goals and two assists in two wins against Milwaukee. His 11 goals match his total for all of 2013/14.
