MASL Weekly - Week 13
Published on January 21, 2015 under Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release
Ontario, Syracuse Solidify Positioning
1/21/15 - The Ontario Fury and Syracuse Silver Knights each won two games last week and grabbed solid holds on second place in their respective divisions.
Ontario beat the Turlock Express 10-6 and the Las Vegas Legends 6-5 to improve to 10-5, two games ahead of Turlock and Las Vegas and just a half game behind the San Diego Sockers.
Syracuse rallied from three goals down to beat the Rochester Lancers 12-11 and routed the Harrisburg Heat 24-9. The Silver Knights have now won five out of six to improve to 7-6. The even better news is they no longer have to face Baltimore, who swept their season series 4-0.
Third place Rochester, losers of six of their last seven, trails Syracuse by 1 1/2 games, but has two games left with Syracuse who leads the season series 3-1.
Looking ahead, the schedule this week features two particularly important games on Sunday. The Wichita B-52s (7-6) will look to win their fifth straight game as they travel to Milwaukee to face the 8-6 Wave. Both teams are fighting, along with the Chicago Mustangs, for the final two playoff spots in the Central Division.
In the other big game, the Central leading Missouri Comets (13-0) will head to Mexico for two games including the marquee matchup on Sunday against the 14-1 Monterrey Flash.
MASL Team of the Week
GK - Diego Reynoso, Monterrey Flash - What a whirlwind couple of weeks for Reynoso. After sitting out the first two months of the season he signed with Saltillo Rancho Seco only to be released after one game. Monterrey's regular goalkeeper Jose Bontti had to return to Argentina to tend to an ailing family member so the Flash signed Reynoso who was 4-0 for the team last year as a backup. In an eight-day span Reynoso beat the Sidekicks twice and then held Saltillo to one goal over two games, including a shutout Sunday. Since rejoining the Flash he is 4-0 with a 1.51 GAA
D - Joshio Sandoval, Chicago Mustangs - Sandoval has had an increased role in his second season with the Mustangs and has already met or surpassed all of his 2013/14 numbers in three less games. Sunday he had a goal and two blocks in a 9-1 win over the Tulsa Revolution.
D - Robert Palmer, Missouri Comets - When you have the highest scoring offense in the league, someone still needs to play defense. Palmer is holding his own on both ends of the floor, averaging a point a game while placing fifth in the league in blocks. On Friday he helped Missouri improve to 13-0 with two assists and four blocked shots.
F - Matt Clare, Wichita B-52s - Clare notched his fifth hat trick of the season - or sixth if you count his six goal game against St. Louis as a double. He added an assist to help send the B-52s to their fourth straight win. One day after The St. Louis Ambush's stingy defense held Missouri to a season-low seven goals, Clare and the B-52s exploded for 14 goals.
F - Tiguinho Dias, Ontario Fury - Tiguinho led the Fury to two more wins and pushed the Turlock Express and Las Vegas Legends further into their rear view mirror. His three goals and three assists planted him in fourth place in the MASL with 42 points.
F - Adriano Dos Santos, Baltimore Blast - Everyone is a scoring threat on the Blast and Dos Santos is one of 12 players averaging a point a game or better. Dos Santos had two goals and three assists in two road wins to keep Baltimore undefeated this season. His 16 points are third best on the team.

Lourenco Andrade for the Win
Andrade poured four goals and three assists on Saltillo in two wins. His game-winning goal in Sunday's game gave him a league-leading six, which ties the league record set by Kraig Chiles, who did it twice.
From Seattle to Tacoma Without Leaving Your Seat
The operating rights to the Seattle Impact were sold after a rocky three months for the expansion team. Lane Smith, the new owner, immediately brought back the Tacoma Stars name and an entirely new roster. The Stars inherited the 3-10 Impact record and will finish their schedule while remaining at the ShoWare Center.
Sour 16
The Harrisburg Heat lost to Syracuse on Sunday, their 16th straight loss dating to last season. That ties the league record previously endured by the Arizona Storm and Texas Strikers. The Heat are the last remaining winless team in the MASL.
