MASL Weekly - Week 10
December 31, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release
Blast, Comets Running Out of Challengers
12/31/14 - The Baltimore Blast and Missouri Comets haven't reached the midseason point yet so it's premature to talk about either having a perfect regular season. At the same time, the Blast (8-0) and Comets (9-0) haven't showed any real signs of vulnerability either.
The Blast established an 8-0 halftime lead at Blue Cross Arena against the Rochester Lancers and coasted to a 19-8 win on Saturday afternoon. The Comets lost a three goal lead against the 4-time league champion San Diego Sockers, but rallied from a 6-5 deficit to win comfortably, 10-7.
Any moral victory the Sockers (6-3) could take out of the competitive game at Missouri, was wiped out by an embarrassing 8-3 loss to St. Louis on Sunday. The punchless Ambush were a combined 6- 21 the last two seasons before holding the Sockers to a franchise-low three goals.
Where the Ambush have come up short offensively they have become a proficient unit at defending and shot blocking. Their three wins already has them one short of matching last year's full season win total.
MASL Team of the Week
GK - Greg Crook, St. Louis Ambush - The veteran goalkeeper has started all eight games for the Ambush this season, and held the Chicago Mustangs to five goals in a one goal loss on Saturday and then held the Sockers to three goals in a big win on Sunday. Sockers Head Coach Phil Salvagio said, "Give St. Louis credit, they had more speed, more fitness, and their goalkeeper played out of his mind today."
D - Chris Mattingly, St. Louis Ambush - The Ambush are in their first year in the MASL, but both Mattingly and Crook have played in the league with the Illinois Piasa. Mattingly and Chad Vandegriffe have been a shot blocking force for St. Louis this season.
D - Jonathan Greenfield, Milwaukee Wave - Greenfield had been held pointless all season until Saturday, when he posted a goal and three assists in Milwaukee's 8-6 win over the Detroit Waza Flo.
F - Neto, Syracuse Silver Knights - Neto was 3rd in the MISL in scoring in 2012/13, but had fallen off that pace since. This season he had just 10 points in seven games until Saturday's win in which he exploded for seven goals and an assist at Harrisburg.
F - Freddy Moojen, Dallas Sidekicks - Moojen has been picking up steam since he began the season on IR. His seven goals and two assists at Oxford City gave him a league season high nine points and 15 goals in his last four games.
M - Vahid Assadpour, Missouri Comets - Assadpour scored a team-high five points in Missouri's 10-7 win over San Diego. His three goals and two assists pushed him to 7th in the league with 25 points.

Turlock Leashes the Fury
The Ontario Fury had an 8-6 lead and a power play with 2:18 left in the game. Turlock, who had been using Junior Alencar as an emergency backup goalkeeper after both starting goalies were red carded in the second quarter, went to sixth attacker Juan Gonzalez and, improbably, scored two shorthanded goals to tie the game. Alencar, once again returning to the field with Gonzalez continuing to man the nets, scored in overtime to give Turlock a 9-8 win.
No Global Warming in Harrisburg
Harrisburg scored a season high nine goals, but allowed 12 in their latest loss, this one to the Syracuse Silver Knights. The Heat remain stone cold falling to 0-7 on the season, their 12th straight loss dating to last season.
Sensational Sevens
Saturday was a big night for the Dallas Sidekicks Freddy Moojen and Syracuse's Neto. Both players scored seven goals in their respective wins. Moojen added two assists. It was the second and third incidence of an individual seven goal game this season. Seattle's Gordy Gurson was the first to do it this year. The league record is nine goals.
