June 4, 2014 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Texas Marshals News Release

The Texas Marshals spoiled the Victoria Generals home opener on Tuesday night (and even into Wednesday morning) as the Marshals claimed a 4-3 win in 14 innings. The game lasted a little shy of five hours, finishing around 12:15am as the two teams battled back and fourth through the extra frames. What began as a pitchers duel ended as a back-and-forth thrill ride.

The Marshals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with the help of two defensive miscues by the Generals. After that, Generals starting pitcher Ryan Benitez (Texas A&M University - Kingsville) settled in and cruised through the next six innings. Benitez struck out 12 batters and allowed just two hits through seven innings.

Marshals starting pitcher Ross Vance (West Virginia University) matched Benitez most of the way, tossing 6.1 shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out two.

The Generals tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Pedro Barrios (Ranger College).

The Marshals retook the lead in the top of the 11th inning as Adonis Askew (Oklahoma City University) singled home Dominic Todarello (University of Arkansas) who pinch ran for Taylor Raglin (Stephen F. Austin State University) after a single. But the Generals would answer right back in the bottom of the frame as Dayfran Ortiz hit an RBI single to score Kyle Danford (Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi).

The game looked to be about over in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Generals loaded the bases with no outs, but relief pitcher Chad Nelson (University of Oklahoma) got out of the frame on a 1-2-3 double play and a diving catch by Oliver Christensen (LSU Shreveport) at second base to end the inning.

With the momentum in the Marshals favor, Christensen delivered an RBI single to score Todarello in the top of the 13th. But the Generals would answer once again in the bottom half of the inning as Ortiz singled home Justin Pacchioli (Lehigh University) to tie the game back up.

With two outs in the top of the 14th, Jace Reese (Cisco College) came into score on an RBI single by Dillon Coates (Clarke University).

This time, the Marshals were able to hold on for the win as Joseph Herbert notched the save with a three-up, three-down, bottom of the 14th to secure the 4-3 extra inning victory.

Nelson picked up his first win of the season in his first appearance. Nick Ramos (Stephen F. Austin State University) was the only Marshals to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-6 on the night.

With the win, the Marshals improve to 3-2 on the season as the Generals fall to 3-1. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night in Victoria at 7:05pm.
