Mariners Take the Field for the Last Time at Calfee Park

August 27, 2011 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release

Pulaski VA - A crowd of 999 fans came out to Historic Calfee Park to watch the Pulaski Mariners hit the field one last time in 2011, as they did battle with the Kingsport Mets. Unfortunately for the Mariners, not much went their way tonight, losing by a wide margin of 13-1.

The Mets opened the game scoring five runs in the first two innings and never looked back. They scored early, often, and in bunches tallying three runs in the fourth, three in the eighth, and two in the ninth.

For the Mets Juan Gamboa, Dustin Lawley, and Luke Stewart all nailed home runs. Jordy Lara stayed hot for the Mariners, blasting his third homerun in two nights.

Rafael Montero got the win with his five innings of shut out baseball. Dylan Unsworth was tagged with the loss.

It was a season of highs and lows for the Mariners in their 2011 campaign, but I believe I speak for more than myself when I say that this season has been enjoyable through and through. From walk-off hits by Efrain Nunez, Dillon Hazlett, and Jamal Austin to great pitching performances, to cats running onto the field Calfee Park saw it all this year.

We would like to say thank you for everyone's continued support throughout the 2011 season. You can keep up with the Mariners during the off-season through our web-site www.pulaskimariners.net and our face book page.

For me, this is my last article of the season. I would personally like to thank the Abby Lyman and the entire Pulaski Mariners staff for making this summer one that will always be remembered. I'd also like to wish all the players and coaches good luck as they continue on with their careers. So for one last time this is Tommy Withers, your media intern, signing off.
