Pulaski Mariners News Release

The Mariners gain an early lead, but fall to the Burlington Royals, 6-5.

Pat Peterson (3.26 ERA) started the Mariners out in the second game of the series against the Burlington Royals. Peterson pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing four runs; two earned, on four hits, walked three, and struck out four.

Rafael Fernandez leads the Mariners off, and is hit by a pitch and awarded a base. With Tom Verdi batting, a wild pitch by Yunior Marte allows Fernandez to advance to second, and Verdi walks. With Jay Baum up to bat, a throwing error by Chase Vallot on the pickoff attempt sends Fernandez home and Verdi to third. Jay Baum grounds out, but Verdi makes it home giving Pulaski a 2-0 lead on no hits. Burlington cuts the Mariners lead in half in the top of the second on a run by Jose Martinez.

In the bottom of the fourth, Daniel Torres is hit by a pitch, and advances to second on a single by Jose Leal. A single on a line drive by Chase Nyman sends Torres home bringing the Mariners to a 3-1 lead.

The Royals come back in the sixth to hang three more on the board. Joshua Banuelos singles, then advances to second on a throwing error with Amalani Fukofuka batting. Fukofuka walks and Riley King singles allowing Banuelos to score and Fukofuka to advance to third. Ryan Dale reaches on a fielding error by Verdi and Fukofuka scores and King advances. A single by Angelo Castellano brings King home and gives the Royals a 4-3 lead over the Mariners.

Burlington adds two more runs to their lead in the top of the ninth, against Pulaski reliever Ugueth Urbina (5.55 ERA). Urbina allowed two runs on three hits in three and one-third innings pitched.

The Mariners rally in the bottom of the ninth, gaining two more runs on singles by Fernandez, Verdi, and Wayne Taylor, a hit by pitch on Jay Baum, and a walk by Torres. The Mariners are not able to catch the Royals, and fall in the second game of the series.

The same two teams will play tomorrow in the last regular-season game at Historic Calfee Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.
