Mariners 9th Inning Rally Falls Short

July 4, 2012 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release

Pulaski, VA- The Mariners received their tenth loss of the season Wednesday afternoon falling to the Rays 6-5 despite posting a three run ninth inning.

Going into the Independence Day matchup against the Mariners, Princeton's starting pitcher Blake Snell posted exceptional numbers giving up a mere two hits in 12 and 2/3 innings pitched. Even though he gave up twice as many hits as his season total, Snell did not disappoint. Getting the July 4th win while throwing five innings, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out four Pulaski hitters.

Down 1 to 0, Pulaski threatened to take a two run lead in the bottom of the second. DH Phillips Castillo blasted a fastball deep into center field with runners on first and second, only to have Princeton's CF Andrew Toles make a spectacular leaping catch that robbed Castillo of his first home run of the season.

The Mariners trailed 6-2 going into the ninth inning. Peguero led off the inning with a single that started a rally for the Mariners. The Rays helped out by committing back-to-back errors resulting in two Pulaski runs scored. RF Richard Palase gave the fans a reason to cheer after he singled in Jordy Lara putting the M's within one run. Jabari Henry matched Palase's single giving Phillips Castillo a chance of redemption with an RBI opportunity. To the dismay of the 1,875 fans in attendance, Castillo hit a frozen rope right to the SS resulting in Palase getting doubled up leading off of second to end the game. The Rays left fielder William Argo began the day hitting .205 in 44 at bats this season. He certainly helped his cause putting together a 3 for 4 day with two doubles, three runs scored, and one RBI.

Pulaski will take on Princeton for the second game of a three game series tomorrow night at 7p.m here at Historic Calfee Park.
