QMJHL Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League

March Players of the Month Named

March 26, 2024 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release

Forward of the Month

Israel Mianscum - Sherbrooke Phoenix - 9GP, 7G, 12A, 19Pts

The Sherbrooke Phoenix not only earned a spot in the 2024 Gilles-Courteau Trophy playoffs after a dramatic off-season roster overhaul, but it will also enjoy home ice in round one. A key factor in these developments has been Israel Mianscum's contributions throughout the campaign.

The 20-year-old from Mistissini, Quebec completed the final month of his overage season by recording a point in each contest and a goal in seven of nine outings. One of the highlights included a four-point effort against the Voltigeurs in Drummondville on March 3, part of a five-game span of road games which saw Mianscum record 12 points and a pair of game-winning tallies. The previously mentioned game against the Volts also featured the fifth-year veterans 200th career regular season point in the QMJHL.

Mianscum finished the campaign sitting fifth in the league scoring derby with 87 points in 61 games. He also set new career highs for goals (35), powerplay goals (10) and game-winning goals (6).

Honorable Mention

Cam Squires - Cape Breton Eagles - 10GP, 8G, 11A, 19Pts

Defenseman of the Month

Vsevolod Komarov - Drummondville Voltigeurs - 10GP, 4G, 10A, 14Pts

For the third time in four months, Vsevolod Komarov takes home the league's monthly award for blueliners. This time, it's with an added bonus; his Voltigeurs have earned top spot in the Western Conference and home ice advantage for at least the first three rounds of the postseason.

This time, the 20-year-old from Chelyabinsk, Russia completed his campaign with four multi-point outings, including his third four-point game of the season on March 1 against the Charlottetown Islanders. Two nights later, it was a pair of goals against the Shawinigan Cataractes. Finally, Komarov registered five points over the final two games of the regular season, both victories, helping the Voltigeurs end the year with seven consecutive victories and a two-point margin over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for top spot in the conference.

Komarov completes the 2023-24 season as the league's top defensive scorer with 69 points in 60 games. Of those points, 50 came in just 38 games with the Volts, who acquired him from the Quebec Remparts in early December.

Honorable Mention

Jeremy Langlois - Rouyn-Noranda Huskies - 9GP, 2G, 10A, 12Pts

Goaltender of the Month

Quentin Miller - Rimouski Oceanic - 3-0-0-0, 2.22 GAA, .927 SV%

In the end, it was a tough month for Quentin Miller. However, the 19-year-old from Montreal started March on a roll, his contributions earning the Oceanic fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

Most impressive were Miller's back-to-back starts on the 2nd and 3rd against Quebec and Shawinigan, respectively, which saw the sophomore steer aside 29 and 32 shots in a pair of victories. Only an injury during an eventual shootout win over Blainville-Boisbriand prevented Miller from continuing his hot streak, which saw him allow three goals or less in his final seven starts of the campaign.

Acquired by the Oceanic during the holiday trade period, Miller was a member of the 2023 Memorial Cup Champion Quebec Remparts. Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the fourth round at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Miller posted an impressive 10-4-0-0 record after arriving in Rimouski.

Honorable Mention

Mathis Rousseau - Halifax Mooseheads - 3-2-0-0, 2.31 GAA, .925 SV%

Rookie of the Month

Xavier Villeneuve - Blainville-Boisbriand Armada - 11GP, 1G, 12A, 13Pts

A rookie defenseman in the QMJHL is one of the toughest positions in the game. That's what makes Xavier Villeneuve's quick adjustment all the more impressive.

The 16-year-old from Les Cedres, Quebec went out with a bang in his freshman campaign, at one point enjoying a nine-game point streak, eight of which took place in the regular season's final month. Perhaps his biggest highlight happened during back-to-back games against Gatineau and Drummondville, on the 13th and 15th of March, which saw Villeneuve record consecutive three-point outings. On the other side of the puck, he recorded a +/- rating of even or better on eight occasions.

All of it added up to an impressive move up the standings for the Armada, who enters the postseason as the Western Conference's fifth-seeded squad.

Selected seventh overall by the Armada at the 2023 QMJHL Draft, Villeneuve led all rookie defensemen in scoring this season with 43 points in 54 games. A product of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U-15 program, Villeneuve also represented Team Canada Red at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Honorable Mention

Jiri Klima - Shawinigan Cataractes - 10GP, 9G, 4A, 13Pts
