Colorado Mammoth News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Spotting the Rochester Knighthawks and goaltender Matt Vinc a four-goal cushion usually spells doom for an opponent. But on Saturday night at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y., the Mammoth offense just needed a little time to find its rhythm. And when it did, it exploded! Colorado defeated Rochester, 16-14, to improve to 2-0.
Jeremy Noble (2g, 3a) put the Mammoth on the board 32 seconds into the second quarter, the first of nine tallies for Colorado in the frame. Then Adam Jones (4g, 4a) had his moment to shine, scoring twice and assisting on two others to give the Mammoth its first lead, 5-4. The team never let up. It took a 9-5 lead into halftime, and led 11-8 through three.
"The guys played well!" said coach Dan Stroup. "There's a few areas we can improve on, but overall, I think our team goals were met."
Second-year defenseman Robert Hope scored his first career goal - the score that ultimately proved to be the game-winner - with 3:04 remaining.
"It's exciting to get the first one, as long as I can help the team win," said Hope.
And that he did. For the second straight game, the former first-round pick led all players in loose balls. He was one of three Colorado defensemen (Jordan Gilles and Creighton Reid) to score.
The Mammoth defense only found itself short-handed twice, and didn't allow the Knighthawks to take advantage. Conversely, the Mammoth posted three power-play goals, and Callum Crawford (3g, 5a) also buried one short-handed.
Dillon Ward recorded 33 saves in the win in his first start of the season.
John Grant, Jr. had one goal and five assists playing against his former team. Eli McLaughlin scored twice on the man-up, and had one helper. Chris Wardle had one goal and one assist.
The Mammoth returns home to take on the Buffalo Bandits on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center next Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7:00pm MT. Tickets are on sale now.
