Mammoth Acquires Former MVP Casey Powell

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth announced today that the team has acquired 2010 National Lacrosse League Most Valuable Player Casey Powell in a trade from the Rochester Knighthawks in exchange for defenseman Jon Sullivan and a third-round draft pick, pending league approval.

"Casey is one of the best to ever play lacrosse," said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. "He should step in and make an immediate impact on our offense, and on our team as a whole."

The six-time All-Pro became the first American ever to win the NLL's MVP award in 2010, when he posted 44 goals and 36 assists in 14 games played. Powell, in his 10th season in the NLL, has scored 262 goals and 355 assists in 126 career games.

A member of Lacrosse Magazine's All-Century Team, Powell carried on the tradition of the legendary number 22 jersey at Syracuse University that was worn before him by Gary Gait. The West Carthage, N.Y. native graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer and was the two-time Division 1 National Player of the Year. He was a four-time member of the NCAA All-Tournament team and is the all-time leader in career points in Major League Lacrosse.

Powell has won gold while donning the red, white and blue in world championship competition, and set the national record for career points by a high school player (553) at Carthage Senior High School.

With Sullivan's departure, the Mammoth has named defenseman John Gallant one of the team's assistant captains, joining John Grant Jr. Gallant was Colorado's team captain from 2010-11.

Powell will make his debut this Saturday, March 16 at 7pm MT on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center as Colorado takes on Buffalo. The Mammoth defeated the Bandits, 12-6, in Buffalo two days ago in a game that featured a ten-player brawl late in the fourth quarter.
