Mallards Rally, Fall To Dayton 4-3 In Shootout

MOLINE, Ill. (March 14, 2010) - Juris Stals scored two goals- including the game tier with just under a minute left in regulation- only for a three goal third period comeback bid to prove not quite enough for the host Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, as the Mallards fell in a shootout to the Dayton Gems 4-3 Sunday after the Gems' Tim Hartung converted the only successful penalty shot. The Mallards did earn one point for the shootout loss.

The Mallards were shorthanded but had five skaters on the ice after pulling goaltender Kyle Jones (30 saves) for an extra attacker for a second time when Stals's tip-in from the side of the net knotted the score at three with 55 seconds left in the third period. It was Stals who had triggered Quad City's rally from a 3-0 deficit at 10:24 of the third by burying a rebound after the Mallards had gone on the power play and emptied the net for the first time to create a 6-on-4 advantage. Just under two minutes later Justin White's backhander from the slot cut the Gems' lead to 3-2 and set the stage for the wild finish.

The Mallards were forced to battle back late after the Gems scored three times without reply in the first forty minutes of the contest.

Preston Briggs scored the game's first goal from the left wing boards at 3:46 of the first period.

The Gems widened the lead to 3-0 by scoring twice in the second period. Pierce Norton buried Jonathan Ornelas's centering pass to make it 2-0 at 13:22; just under four minutes later Corey Couturier's shorthanded breakaway goal stretched the gap to three.
