MOLINE, Ill. (August 6, 2009) - The Quad City Mallards of the IHL announced on Thursday that Brian Lavelle has been named as the Mallards director of communications and broadcasting, according to Shawn Hackman, Mallards executive vice president and general manager. As director of communications and broadcasting, Mr. Lavelle will direct all communications and public relations activities; spearhead all community relations efforts; manage the team's web site and social media, oversee all broadcast operations, and serve as the play-by-play voice for the Mallards professional hockey club in the new IHL.
"We are pleased to add Brian to our staff," said Hackman. "His well-rounded experience and exposure to a variety of communications and media platforms make Brian a valuable asset to our organization. Bringing Brian into the fold is a large step forward in establishing a local presence with our media and fans and furthers our commitment to blend into the fabric of the Quad Cities community. We are looking for great things from Brian; he will be implementing our âBlades for Grades' program which will be launched within the next month."
"I am very excited to join Mallards' organization," stated Lavelle. "The Mallards and the Quad Cities are known throughout the sport for their storied hockey tradition. It is quite a thrill to be a part of the return of the Mallards and I look forward to working with the media, the fans, and all Mallards partners in the community as we build the most exciting team in professional hockey."
Lavelle joins the Mallards after spending eight years as the director of media relations and broadcasting for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Lavelle provided radio play-by-play for the RoughRiders, including calling the team's 2005 USHL Clark Cup title victory. He also called both the 2007 and 2008 USHL All-Star Games.
While with the RoughRiders, Lavelle also acted as the team's liaison with the local media, directed the Riders' community relations efforts and oversaw the club's web site.
Prior to arriving in Cedar Rapids Lavelle spent two years with the Billings Bulls of the America West Hockey League. He served as the Bulls' director of public relations while also acting as the team's radio broadcaster.
Originally from the Boston area, Lavelle is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire.
