Ohio Vortex News Release

CANTON, OH - May 21, 2010 - Last week was a time of reflection and celebration for the players, staff, sponsors, and ownership of the Ohio Vortex. Thursday marked the End of the Season Dinner for the first-year professional soccer franchise. A successful inaugural season brought dividends on and off the field.

The Canton, Ohio club earned a respectable 8-8 record and a third place finish in the PASL-Pro's Eastern Division. Allen Eller, an All-League First Team selection, paced the expansion squad with 34 goals and 19 assists. Keeper Nate Rausch led the defense with 145 saves, while defender Jared Dombrowski finished with 12 blocks.

Two players have even gone on to play professionally during the outdoor season. Louie Rolko (Pittsburgh Riverhounds) and Michael Pertz (Real Maryland FC) are playing in the United Soccer Leagues' Second Division (USL-2). Pertz made his second appearance of the season on Sunday vs. the Richmond Kickers, while Rolko has one appearance with the Riverhounds.

However, the real heroes were the local charities, which received $10,000 as a result of the unique business model of the Vortex. 85% of gate receipts and 10% of concession sales went to charitable organizations in Northeastern Ohio. Numerous public appearances by Vortex players and coaches were conducted throughout the region. Teamwork, community service, and promoting the game of soccer were topics of discussion during these visits.

The Vortex have a busy offseason ahead that includes summer camps and clinics as well as live events. Full details about Vortex summer camps and clinics can be obtained at http://www.ohiovortex.org.

The club has been invited to the area's largest World Cup viewing party on June 12th (1:30-4:30 pm) at Johnny Malloy's Sports Pub in Akron, Ohio.

Players have also volunteered to participate in a national high school soccer combine in Canton, Ohio on July 16th and 17th. All of this is in addition to the preparations already taking place for the 2010-2011 season.
