Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Throughout the years, opposing teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League haven't exactly enjoyed making the trip to Lewiston to face the MAINEiacs. This year's version of the Lewiston MAINEiacs is doing all it can to make sure that thought remains true. Last week, the MAINEiacs picked up two more wins on home ice, as they swept a four-game homestand, while extending their home winning streak to eight games. Lewiston now has a 21-7-0-0 record at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee this season.

On Tuesday night, the MAINEiacs welcomed the Shawinigan Cataractes and their seven-game winning streak to town. However, that streak came to an end, as Ian Saab broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second period. Michael Chaput added some insurance with a shorthanded goal in the third period, while Andrey Makarov made 37 saves in the 4-2 win for the home team.

On Saturday, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles faced Lewiston's wrath, and skated away licking their wounds after a 6-0 thumping by the MAINEiacs. Andrey Makarov was one of the stars once again, as he stopped 25 shots for his second shutout of the season. Six different Lewiston players found the back of the net, including Cole Hawes, who extended his point streak to six games.

With the two wins, the MAINEiacs have reached the 70-point mark for the first time since the 2007-08 season, improving to 35-16-0-2 (72 points) on the year. Lewiston remains in second place in the Telus East Division, trailing Quebec by seven points, with two head-to-head match-ups in Lewiston this coming weekend. Overall, Lewiston is in fifth place, trailing Drummondville by one point with one game in hand. The MAINEiacs currently have a two-point lead on Acadie-Bathurst (even games), a three-point lead on Shawinigan (Shawinigan has two games in hand), and a four-point lead on Gatineau (even games).

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (38-12-1-2, 79 pts) were involved in two shutouts to start last week, and the two were extremely different. On Wednesday, the Remparts humiliated Victoriaville 10-0. Quebec could have used some of those goals on Friday, as they were blanked 1-0 by Montreal. Both teams got on the scoreboard in the Remparts' final game of the weekend, as they defeated Gatineau 6-3 on Saturday.

The Victoriaville Tigres (28-22-1-3, 60 pts) had a tough start and finish last week, falling 10-0 to Quebec on Wednesday, as well as 5-3 to Chicoutimi on Saturday. However, there was one positive game for the Tigres, as they edged Cape Breton 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (21-22-4-6, 52 pts) have moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Telus East Division, thanks to a perfect 3-0 record last week. Chicoutimi got the ball rolling in the right direction on Wednesday, holding off rival Rimouski 5-3. On Thursday, the Sagueneens needed a shootout, but still got two points with a 3-2 win over Rouyn-Noranda. Finally, on Saturday, Chicoutimi earned a 5-3 victory against Victoriaville.

The Rimouski Oceanic (24-28-1-1, 50 pts) have hit a wall, losing each of their last six games. Three of those defeats came last week, beginning with the 5-3 setback in Chicoutimi on Wednesday. The Oceanic then headed out to Val-d'Or for the weekend, where they came away empty handed, losing 1-0 and 3-2.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar (9-37-5-4, 27 pts) haven't had much to smile about this season, but last weekend was one of those occasions. The Drakkar swept a two-game series from the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at Centre Henry Leonard, winning 3-2 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday. Baie-Comeau ended up winning all three head-to-head games against Rouyn-Noranda this season.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Saint John Sea Dogs had a lot of fun offensively last week, as they scored 22 goals in three games, extending their unbeaten streak in regulation to 16 games. The Sea Dogs ran through Acadie-Bathurst 7-2 on Wednesday, annihilated Moncton 11-2 on Friday, and had a much closer score of 4-3 in a win over Halifax on Saturday.

Following their 4-2 loss in Lewiston on Tuesday, the Shawinigan Cataractes were able to rebound with a pair of wins at Centre Bionest. Shawinigan blew out Cape Breton 8-0 on Thursday, before erasing a 3-1 deficit for a 4-3 shootout win over Gatineau on Friday. The Cataractes now lead the Olympiques by one point for seventh place in the overall standings.

Five goals were scored by one team in all three games involving the Drummondville Voltigeurs last week. However, Drummondville was that team on only one occasion, as they defeated PEI 5-1 on Friday. The Halifax Mooseheads lit the lamp five times against the Voltigeurs in a 5-2 win on Wednesday, before the Acadie-Bathurst Titan won by a 5-1 final score on Saturday.

The final two games in the league last week were both won by the PEI Rocket. PEI scored five straight goals in a 5-4 overtime win over Acadie-Bathurst on Thursday, before scoring five more goals in a 5-2 win over Moncton on Saturday.
