Major League Lacrosse Weekly Release
May 29, 2008 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
With the First Pick ... - After trading the eighth overall pick, the Boston Cannons selected Johns Hopkins University midfielder Paul Rabil with the first overall pick in Wednesday's MLL Collegiate Draft. It is the second time in the last four years that a Hopkins player has been tabbed with the top pick. Kyle Harrison was the first overall pick in the 2005 Collegiate Draft after leading the Blue Jays to the NCAA title.
And Then There Were Two - Entering the third week of the MLL season, there are only two undefeated teams remaining. The Rochester Rattlers and the Philadelphia Barrage will bring identical 2-0 records into this week's match-up at PAETEC Park. Rochester has defeated Long Island and Boston so far this year while Philadelphia won against Washington and Long Island.
Welcome Home - The Rochester Rattlers and the San Francisco Dragons will play their first home games of the season this weekend. Rochester will host Philadelphia while the Dragons will face Los Angeles.
Home is Where the Wins Are - After three of the four games were won by the home team, seven of the first nine games this season have been won by the home team. Only Long Island and Boston have lost a game at their home site.
We Want to Stay Home - The Chicago Machine will be looking to earn another home win on Sunday afternoon when they host the Washington Bayhawks at TOYOTA Park. Over the last two seasons, the Machine have a 4-3 home record after earning a victory over San Francisco in the season opener two weeks ago.
24/7 - Rochester attackman John Grant, Jr. scored a season-high seven goals, including a two-pointer, as the Rattlers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 17-14 victory over Boston on Friday night. He scored three of the goals during the fourth quarter as Rochester rallied to win for the second straight week. Grant leads the MLL with 11 goals in two games.
Saving the Best for Last - Over their first two games, the Rochester Rattlers have outscored their opponents, 12-1, in the fourth quarter. After outscoring Long Island by 7-1 in the final stanza of the season opener, the Rattlers outscored Boston, 5-0, in last week's victory. John Grant, Jr. and Jeff Zywicki have combined to score eight of the Rattlers' 12 fourth quarter markers.
History in the Making - Rochester attackman Casey Powell enters this week's game against Philadelphia needing seven points to become the all-time leading scorer in Major League Lacrosse history. Mark Millon holds the MLL record with 350 career points. Powell was held without a point in the Rattlers' 17-14 victory over Boston last Friday night.
Golden Goalie - With the Barrage's 18-12 victory over Long Island last weekend, Philadelphia goalkeeper Brian Dougherty posted the 50th regular season victory of his career, extending his MLL record. He made 18 saves, including seven in the third quarter, to lead Philadelphia to its fifth straight regular season victory, dating back to last year.
A "Buggs" Life - Washington attackman Andrew "Buggs" Combs matched a career high with six goals in the Bayhawks' 17-16 victory over Denver on Saturday night. It was the third six-goal game of his career and his first since a six-goal effort against San Francisco in 2006.
